Default why are tv commercials so f'ing loud?

Has anyone else noticed in the past few months how obnoxiously loud TV commercials are compared to whatever the show you are watching is? I have noticed it on brighthouse at my girlfriends place and Dish network at my house. I'll fall asleep with the tv on and not 5 minutes later i'll be woken up by a commercial that is 20 dB higher than the program i was watching.

I hear you on that one, I hate having to turn the volume up/down constantly.

I work as a producer for CBS so im the one making the loud commercials. The most common problem is when stations switch from national commercials to local commercials.

Each show leaves a few min of black space during commercial breaks for us to insert local television commercials. The commercials sound louder because the local master control is broadcasting at a louder volume than the master control that sent the original show.

Most of the time we sync up the volumes but its hard to make sure that every commercial that comes through us is at the same volume as the program they are airing in.

Im not exactly sure why no one has gotten around to it. It makes since in my book. I don't work in master control so im not exactly sure of the process that it involves. I do know however that alot of TV's now have a setting in them that will equalize the volumes between show and commercial.

I once heard it was done purposely to get people attention. I don't know if there is any truth to that.

ROCNDAV nailed it, it is only the local commercials that blast your ears off. My company's commericals are loud as hell sometimes..haha

not everyone has that luxury or the luxury of having a TV that will equalize the sound of everything that comes through. It's not just local commercials anymore either, just today there was one for McDonald's that just about blew out my eardrums as I walked by the TV.

I've noticed a problem like this until just recently, and it seems like it is getting worse and worse.

It sucks when it does that. Since I've been installing Dish tv though I don't even watch tv anymore though, so I guess I don't notice it getting worse.

I notice the same thing on radio as well as the TV. I always just thought it was an attention getter as well. Especially late at night with the TV,... your falling asleep to a program and then "BAM!" That F***ing commercial wakes you up.

Then they'd just start plastering sponsors all over sports uniforms like that joke of a sport soccer. I think AIG played Sanyo for the European championship.
