Default Block recommendation for street/track car

Im building a twin turbo protouring 69 camaro with plans for about 1000fwhp. Its going to be a street/roadcourse car with about 50/50 use.

I was originally set on an iron lsx but now that I think about I dont want all that weight over the nose.

Im between the iron lsx, warhawk ls7x and an erl prepped ls2/ls7.

Ive searched the forums for an answer but its hard to get a straight answer because everybody's needs and plans are different.

I would lean twords the ERL prepped ls2. We will be offering some aluminum block solutions by the end of this winter too.

I have seen quite a few ls2 and normal 6.0 iron blocks running that power level no problems. heck there are some 346 running that power level pretty sure.

warhawk is pretty exotic and super expensive just to save a few pounds. You should be able to save weight in other areas or just move your battery to trunk. Think 6.0 iron is only about 60 or 80 pounds more than aluminum and have gone mid 1000s range.

But hey if you want to spend huge money on a warhawk whatever. I can see warhawk or lsx block being good for mid 1000s to over 2000 hp builds.

But seriously what kind of tire can hook even past 1000rwhp ?

+1, on the ERL setup. You can have them add the extra bolt holes also at the same time. You get a huge weight break over the LSx and a price break over the warhawk.

ERL all the way, if what we've done with one is not enough to convince people, you cant be helped.

Get your erl superdeck I LS2, have Billy Briggs assemble it and you'll be good to go!!

thanks for the input.. you know how plans for car builds snowball. hence the warhawk.. I wrote to ERL and he gave me some good info and linked me to some interviews about their ls prepped block.

the 1000rwhp is more so that I can put slicks on it and get a nice time slip. Im using the word decent since the car will be set up for the road course and not the quarter mile.. so it will be roughly the equivalent of a 700 hp car with a 4 link, high stall etc.

its also for bragging rights lol... if ur gonna but twins on an ls it seems like a nice number to shoot for.

Can anyone explain how their truss design actually works? I don't see how what they are doing would make the block stronger.

erl ls2 ls7? any differences besides dry sump and cubes?

I'm not really sure on the differences, I wasnt aware they were offering a ls7. You can get 427cuin with one of their ls2's because of the resleeveing, im not sure if you can go bigger or not.

This will be the 3rd year for my block if it still specs out ok,which i wouldnt see any reason why it wouldnt, so my cu in should be about 410+- with the hone.

I was priced 4200 plus 1000 core charge for a super deck 1 6 bolt. Just for arguments sake how does this compare to warhawks standard deck ls7x that goes for 4700 on summit with finished cylinder bores?

4700 plus some machining seems pretty even with a 5200 block from ERL's

^ You're going to have a lot of money into a warhawk block with the machine work that will be needed to make everything right. People are having quite a bit of problems with them. If you search on here you'll find quite a few issues. Plus is you ship ERL a block that they use you probably won't be charged the core fee.

yes ive been through this forum inside and out looking for info on iron lsx, erl ls2, lq9, warhawk and ive been back and forth and then back and forth again since i dont have a money tree in my yard but I also wuld like an aluminum block.

im building a pro-touring road course car so weight is important to me. its just i dont know how much 80lbs (difference between iron lsx and erl ls2) will affect the handling of the car. I dont wanna break any records but I would like to be competitive.

it seems most of the people here build 1/4 mile cars so weight is still an issue but power can more than make up for it in a 1/4 car.... not true in a road course car

The LSx block is more than a 80 lb difference. Just going from an aluminum block to an iron truck block is over 80 lbs. The LSx block weighs even more than an iron truck block.

I was assuming the ERL prepped block added a couple lbs to the ls2 block putting it in the ballpark of ~120, 130. Thats why I said 80lbs difference between that and the lsx.

After some thinking....because its a pro touring road course car, the lsx is gonna get the boot. The ERL prepped block is kinda costly unless im trying to make the cover of a magazine or break a record... which im not. The car will never get done if I shell out that kinda money. Gotta keep it from snowballing even more. Its a disease.

With that in mind, im left with the iron truck block or a stock ls2/ls7.

Ive heard of people putting 1000fwhp through these blocks. I believe it included Katech Lingenfelter and some other people over at lateral-g.net

Any opinions on that.. ls2/ls7 stock block with billet main caps??

I would just build an LS2 engine with a 4.0 stroker crankshaft and AFR 225 heads, which is what we did for this CTS-V. It is at 809 rwhp at only 14.4 psi of boost, and the customer recently put it on another dyno where it made 815 rwhp. With race gas we could up the boost to the 18 psi range and ad another 100 rwhp. Thats pretty much the way I decided to go. I want to run either a procharged ls2/ls7 and a t56. The aluminum block will give me the weight advantage just as the t56 will as opposed to a fat 4l80e.

Since its a road course car weight is a big deal. The procharger has a better power delivery for my application since it doesnt have that crazy torque down low and the power continues all the way up the rpm range.

Since its a road course car, the ls7 appeals to me since it has dry sump oiling but Im kinda scared to put too much boost through it. ls2 has a little more meat on it. What are your thoughts on that since you have experience with procharged ls motors?

I understand your decision with the block, but using a procharger on a road race car? I dont think those blower units were designed for big power and continous duty like 20 laps around a road circuit, I cant imagine one living for very long,I mean some the guys i see using them to drag race cant even get one to live for and entire event(4-5 passes).
