Default 317 head swap

when i swap the 317 heads onto a 98 5.7 block is there any tricks or tips i need to know,parts i need besides head gasket of course?

do i need to modify a head gasket for the swap or use 5.7 or 6.0 stock gasket
i assume they are all the same

also does anyone have a good link to one of those head gasket thickness versus chamber size=comp. ratio charts for a stock displacement ls1

and any tips on gasket thickness/brand for running about 16 pounds of boost

thanx guys sorry for all the questions just trying to learn from experience

Yeah, go with ARP head studs for 16 lbs. I got some used from a local shop for about half the price as new. I went with 6L Corvette MLS gaskets. I just went to a dealer and ordered them. It's nice to have friends!(discount!)

317 heads on a 346 with 0.054" gasket will have a 9.4 static compression ratio with -2cc pistons. Definitely want to go with 6.0L gaskets. Even with ARP head studs, it is going to be hard to keep the heads from lifting with 16 psi. The tune is going to have to be dead nuts right on.

from the chart i saw with a 71 cc chamber and 2cc relief it should be about 9.0 to 1
is this not correct?

Correct. With a -2cc piston on 0.054" gaskets, the static compression level will be 9.4:1.

If you don't mind re-running, what effect does a -4cc valve relief make vs -2cc relief?

72.27cc = 9.1 CR
71.71cc = 9.2 CR
71.05cc = 9.3 CR
70.59cc = 9.4 CR
70.03cc = 9.5 CR
69.74cc = 9.6 CR
68.91cc = 9.7 CR
68.35cc = 9.8 CR
67.79cc = 9.9 CR
67.23cc = 10.0 CR
66.67cc = 10.1 CR (stock LS1 head spec)
66.11cc = 10.2 CR
65.55cc = 10.3 CR
64.99cc = 10.4 CR
64.43cc = 10.5 CR (stock LS6 head spec)
63.87cc = 10.6 CR
63.31cc = 10.7 CR
62.75cc = 10.8 CR
62.19cc = 10.9 CR
61.63cc = 11.0 CR
61.07cc = 11.1 CR
60.51cc = 11.2 CR
59.95cc = 11.3 CR
59.39cc = 11.4 CR
58.83cc = 11.5 CR

is this not correct here,i show that a 317 head has a 71cc chamber and with a 2cc relief would i not be right around 9.0 to 1,if im not correct could you explain why

This one also agrees, so that chart is off.

Dont mean to be a thread thief, but I am considering the same heads, and I needed to know if PRC's for stock ls1 (241) heads will fit on the 317's and also if I need to use a stock length push rod or a longer one, I have a stock bottom end and am changing to relieve some pressure and save face till I can forge the bottom. Thanks, Sorry again for interjecting

I'm also getting ready to do the 317 head swap but I bought gm mls gaskets for the 5.7L. I held the gaskets up to the heads and they lined up perfectly. How would I tell the difference between the 2 gaskets besides on e saying 6l on it? I just really want to know if I need to go and buy new gaskets before I take my top end apart. OP, I'm sorry for hijacking the thread I just want to be sure that the gaskets I have won't fit.

You guys might get a response if you started a new thread that was titled a little better to your request. Search isn't working any better than closing your eyes and guessing, so you shouldn't get the "use the search" response, haha
