Default inlet openings in compressor housing?

I have been wondering what those cut out pockets are for on some turbo compressor housings are for and do. There is usually like three slits in the intake bell before the turbine which goes into a pocket then has another slit real close to the compressor wheel.I dont have a picture but have this on my turbo and am wondering if it is hampering flow. I just dont know what it is there for , besides maybe heat exchange?!?

Surge Ports. Widens the compressor map up a bit to help avoid surging issues.

Air that cant be stuffed into the engine exits through the ports rather than backing up through the compressor. If they are surge ports they go down to the compressor.

from what i can tell looks like they only have openings before the compressor wheel.. they are common i believe on diesels. and wouldnt you lose alotta pressure with that setup?
