Depends on how much power you want to make. Either way its not optimal.

If you mean the T4 PTE88, what over 400 cubes I'd say that you will still run into backpressure issues if you push it much at all. The 78 is no.

Is this a street car, or strip car? Front mount or Rear mount? Jose of Forced Induction Inc. recommended a TC76 for my rear mount 402cu street car. Also, there's been no mention of your power goal.

Rear mount recommendations will be way different then front mount depending on the level of power you are trying to run. A TC76 for a rear mount 402 will work beautifully up to 650-700rwhp. Put that same turbo on a front mount 402 and it will choke like a rock.

Without a power goal no one will know. For modest setup, the TC78 will work with a 1.15A/R being stock headed makes a nice difference. Now using big heads and looking for a 1000rwhp.....no. You would need a GT88 or GT47-88, or even a GT5018.

my goal started out in the 800hp range.

realistically, more like 650-750 whp

This is a street car, so I dont plan on taking the 408 much past 6000rpms.

I know if I do use the tc78, I will have enormous instant torque but like steve told me, it will nose over around 5000rpms and stop making power.

Chris!!! I didn't realize this was you. Though I did think to myself "man haven't I heard these questions recently?"

If you don't want to make more than 650-750 and don't mind being a little RPM limited, the PTE88 may be an option, but that many cubes will really appreciate a better exhaust side.

I have a 3900lb car that traps 136mph through a TH400 on 15psi with a 5000+ DA and is horribly inefficient (2.25"-2.5" IC Piping). Anyone is welcome to copy it. It's a **** ton of fun to drive on the street, haven't lost to a liter bike on the highway in a long long time.

With a 408 I'd step up to something like GT47-88 myself as long as a 1.0+ divided housing was available so I could use my quick spool valve.

Sizing a rear mount turbo gets trickier when you run an anti-turbo trans like a 6sp.

It's not a rear mount I don't think, AFAIK he told me he had (or could use?) one of John Pham's front mount kits.

Even better then! I just saw DR Turbo post and thought it had been stated. As a front mount I'd definately do a 47-88, good street turbo.

yea steve 3+3 IS 7 lol

spot on its a Pham kit (under the K, tubular manifolds). really still a nice kit for an unlowered car.

I'm leaving the 317's bone stock... either way a 408 is going to move air like a 400+ cube motor. a guy on here offered his pt88... so that what I'm going with.

need to find a buyer for this tc78 and I'll be on the horn with you steve.
