Default Anyone ever see a turbo fail like this?

Looks like it just sheared the shaft, shaft spins without binding. Car was in boost and just a huge cloud of oil smoke and oil out the exhaust (rear mount)[IMG][/IMG]

ya a friend of mine has diesel truck that he pulls with. these trucks use an air shutoff to kill the truck if the chain snaps on the sled. well the air shutoff switch went bad during a 5500rpm pull and activated the air shut off and blocked the intake air and snapped the shaft in the turbo clean off and sent the exhaust wheel up and out the pipe!

I did one exactly like that. It was funny, cause we got it on video. Zombiess might even have the video still. At the time it was a 67 turbo (rear mount) that I was pushing real hard. The car was running 10.80's I think. Anyways, on a pass at about 1000 ft the car lays over, smoke etc.....After a post race inspection I see a ding in the chrome exhuast tip.....coming out.....HMMMM thats weird, it ding came from the inside. Clser looking revealed the shaft broke, and the wheel came outthe exhuast hitting the rolled lip on the chrome tip. Well, on video.......in SLOW MO you see the wheel come out at about mach two....hit the track, spark and tack off across the track. I thought it was funny.
I attributed it to over spinning it, cause I was making as much or more thenthe turbo should have been capable of.

I have seen high horsepower diesels break the shafts like that from not having a large enough or dirty aftercoolers. But they run a little more boost than most gassers will ever see.
