My buddy brought up a good point today while we were discussing it. I run Royal Purple right now. I just wanted to ask because I saw the earlier post about the guy blowing oil through his exhaust. Since the turbo obviously needs oil, I was wondering if synthetic (being slicker than regular oil) was good to use with a turbo, and how slickness and viscocity effect the turbo itself.

The main reason a synthetic is good for a turbo is its thermal stability. When you say "synthetic", it can be broken down even more into base oil groups(Group III, IV and V). Some being more capable than others at elevated temps(group V which is polyol ester is used in jet tubines-usually overkill). Pretty much any modern Group III synthetic will be more than adequate for a turbo application. Remember just because it's synthetic does not mean that it is automatically more slippery(lubricity). As long as you are within guidlines for viscosity you will be fine. The turbo really doesn't change anything except for the addtional thermal loading on the oil.

Just figured I would ask... so any group III oil would be adequate. I wonder if Royal Purple falls into that category?

No its good you asked. Royal purple is a group IV or so they claim. Mobil 1 will not disclose their base oils but many respected people in the lubrication industry claim that they are still group IV. Love them or hate them mobil 1 makes a damn fine synthetic. But to answer your question you will be fine with any group III or more.

Everyone has their brand preferences and mine happens to be Redline. I like it because its one of the few POE's(polyol ester) left. The drawback being that its expensive!!! But worth every last penny.

Good to know... maybe I will consider Redline then for the future. Thanks for all the help. There are a few vendors online carrying these systems for some good prices but nobody anwsers their freaking phones! I run Mobil One in my GTO right now, and the Purple stuff in the Z.
