Default Which to run on a budget?

Ok which system would you guys recomend. I'm thinking of going turbo or procharged. I want to make minimum of 500 hp for around 5k. I have a 99 trans am.

And what prices can I expect from these kits and where is the best place to get them.

I'm used to running a roots blower on a BBC and now I have this ls1 car and I'm ready to tear into it.

Thanks in advance.

If you have basic welding skills a DIY front mount turbo setup is the cheapest way to go.

How much? Where do I get it? Welding is not a problem. Would this be a complete set up?

I vote Procharger, but any type of FI will easily net you 500hp.

yes 317 fit ls1,if the heads are in good shape, and low miles thats a good price.keep your eye open in the for sell section sometimes you can find them cheaper, and last but not least a procharger will be cheaper

There is alot of good info in that link. like stated 500hp is no problem either way, the basic bolt on factor would lean me to a procharger... turbo systems are more in depth when it comes to the install. Having installed both(not on a LS engine) S/C's are easier to install adn a heck of alot of fun

That's the infamous PTK "eBay" kit...you can get just the piping kit for a lot cheaper, that turbo that comes with that kit is junk. It's a decent kit, but a PITA to install. If you have decent welding skills and decide to go turbo over s/c you may want to look into just doing a truck manifold or a truck/C6 manifold setup. If you search you'll find a bunch of build threads with a ton of info, TallyTransAm had a nice build recently.

Ok what about using the eBay kit and a mp t70 or t76 turbo. A set of 60 lb injectors and a meth kit. Would I need a different tb, also a set of 317's and a turbo cam.

Some of this stuff will be baught at cost. My uncle owns a machine shop.

truck manifolds - 50 bucks
60 lb injectors - 350
truck flanges - 55
turbo - 615 for a t70 .96 A/R
1 set of vband flanges (really only need the 1 for the DP) - 35?
wideband - 200
intercooler - 200
piping for hotside - 75
piping for cold side - 120ish?
wastegate - 200

you can do it pretty cheap if you can do it yourself. Thats around 2 grand to do a turbo kit.

You will still need the drain line and feed line, i think thats another 100 for the two.

Sorry but I'm new to turbos and ls1 cars. So I know nothing about routing the pipes. So I figured it would be easier to buy a kit and add the parts I really want such as the turbo. So here goes more questions do I use stock ls1 manifolds or manifolds of a truck and which years and motors. Where can I see actual pics of nice set ups with ps and air still in the car. Again I am very green I'm used to my chevelle with a blower. This is a whole different ball game so please have patients with me.

Thanks Eric

with truck manifolds, you have to get rid of A/C

With ls1 manifolds, you merge them together by the oil pan, and bring the 3" pipe through the driverside past the steering column, and up to your turbo. Than you route your downpipe out the passenger side.

Modular Turbo on here is making a turbo kit, and josh at kentucky performance already has a turbo kit ready to go for a fair price.

If you search on here, theres tons of pictures of people's home-made kits.

im turbo but for you i think the better deal would be a supercharger. turbo setups are more involved than i think you want to spend.

also you need to spend ime reading the FAQ up top to get you alittle more familiar with what we are telling you.

I have started to read up on it and trust me I don't want what everyone else has around me only two people in my area are turbo. One is a 6 sec mustang and the other is a twin 88 BBC chevelle. Everyone else is supercharged or n20 I have done both and really want to go turbo now. Again a huge learning curve but I'm up to it.
