Default Machine shop says a 408 isnt good for boost...

Someone explain? Wouldnt a stroked motor create more exhaust which would be able to spin up a turbo easier?

I would prefer a short-stroke Engine for a turbo setup..you can get the RPM's up quicker and it will spin higher.

A 408 is just fine for a boosted engine. Although it will not work so well with the turbo you have.

I guess all those 408's making 650+ RWHP on boost don't know what they're doing

find another machine shop.. and no short stroke engines don't rev quicker and spin higher

lighter rotating assemblies spin quicker and rev's are based on components not stroke

A built motor will handle boost, as long as the set up is right.

Lol I was looking at a 408 for next winter when I was thinking of going with a pair of 60s or 70s. Or maybe just 1 big turbo. Not sure at this point. Sounds like they want to charge a good lot of money for assembly. How hard is it to build a motor?

Bone stock shortblocks do that no problem. A lot of machinists think they are engine builders... I run into them all the time..

LOL, they arent pushin much boost on a 408 to only hit 650. Those are 347 type numbers.

I run a 408 Iron Block with a ProCharger and put down over 700 RWHP and it runs great.

I think a 408 would be fine you just need to match it with a correct turbo. I see in your sig you a 70mm which would just choke a 408, you should probably look into a 88mm or maybe even a 91. For strictly race use a 408 could probably use a 106.

Whoever told you that is probably an old school guy that thinks a 1.300 tall piston is short. He doesn't realize that with todays thinner rings you can run a much shorter piston and still keep a thick top ring land. The 408 is a very good engine for boost if built properly. We have done several of them over 1000rwhp with no issues.Guys seem to thing you need to run short stroke on fi stuff-i'll take a long stroke any day.

This is the same machine shop that made me sign a waiver because they swore that my .750 springs were going to bind with my .617 lift cam. Those guys don't know ls engines very well, and definately not turbo cars

Damn, I knew that my 408 wasn't worth a crap. Only made 1k+ rwhp with little baby 67's. I knew those 8 second runs didn't really happen. It isn't only the size of the block, but everything that goes on top and in the engine. Than you have to have a tuner that knows what the hell he's doing.

If you don't have confidence in the builder, DON'T DO IT. Why **** away your money (just pass it on to me - I can always use a couple more goodies).

I thought the long stroke increased the pumping work which helped spool the turbo.
