Default Turbo Question ONLY Experts need to reply.

its an odd question but..................

is there a specific distance away from exhaust ports of the head that a turbo will work best with?
or certain length & diameter of tubing from head to turbo flange that is "ideal"?

408ci going foward mount twin 62's-67's

custom building my headers out of 1.75" s.s. primaries
and was planning on stepping to 2" piping before collector/flange.

thanks for the expert advise in advance, I am a newb to turbocharging so I just looking to do it right the first time!!!

The "ideal" spot has alot of leeway to it. You want it to be close enough that it doesnt cause the turbo to get too hot, but you dont want it far enough away that the gases cool and you lose velocity. Theres plenty of people that flip truck manifolds around and are in the single digits. There are people like me that are running ebay kits that have an extra couple feet of piping off one head. People even have good results with rear mounts too and those are several feet from the head.

Just dont make manifolds that have alot of sharp bends and restrictions in them and you will be fine.

don't step the primaries. go 1.75" like you planned into 2.5" piping and/or into a turbo flange collector. the 1.75"/2.5" combo will easily feed in excess of 2000hp

as close as you can get it to the motor. you do not want the exhaust gases to cool before they reach the turbo.

thanks fellas, I will continue with my original plans of 1.75" header tubing to a turbo t4 flange, w/out the stepping of the primaries.
Turbos will be mounting to flange about 4" to the front of the heads, and of course will wrap all piping to contain the heat.

going twin 67's w/ .96 a/r's so this p.o.s. should move!!!!
