Default Found me a used STS kit.. Good or bad?

Well I got my hands on a used STS kit. The kid only wants 550 for it. Bad part is the bearings in the turbo are out! So going to need to rebuild or replace. I don't know much about turbos so any recommendations? The kit looks good. All piping and tubing appears to be there not banged up, Oil pump and wiring included. How hard would the install be or should I take it to a performance shop?

Thanks

i say go for it, finding a turbo is pretty easy. as long as everything is all there as far as piping, and wiring, you will be saving money buying a whole kit at 550 bucks. no matter what when it comes to boosting your car allways expect to spend more than intended. there is a few tricks of the trade to quickly combat the oiling issues that come with sts pumps and the set up in general. hell i have my hands on a turbo you could replace that one with

I say install it yourself, literally the most challenging part was running wires for the oil pump, and making changes that i think are better for the system, and even that was pretty simple. otherwise, it all lays down pretty quick, and easy. is it an intercooled setup? if so, even more so, go for it.

Glad to hear that! Thanks for your input.

Unfortunately it is not a intercooled kit. I was looking into working on that down the road. I had called a shop locally just to get an idea. They quoted me 1k to do the install. I knew I can go that route. What size turbo do you have? How much are you asking for it? Also would I need a tune after the install? If so how do I go about that? I know im asking a lot of questions, very excited to get this up and running.

Thank you

Like whitedevil said expect to pay a little more than you planned. As far as tune, I don't know where you are located, but getting a street/dyno tune is best if that is an option

The install is pretty straight forward and you could likely do it yourself if you only have limited knowledge. the tune is when you need to pay someone else.

I agree but up grade the turbo,s and get a new pump also just to be safe in your mind. Then get a good tuner for the car.

Well said, i didnt mention these things becuase they were already mentioned.

To the OP.

i use the ShurFlo pump on my RM turbo and have zero issues with it, and its fairly quiet.

No one has mentioned pinning the crank. Is pinning the crank needed with an STS setup ?

pinning the crank is required on supercharged cars only as the supercharger is driven off the belt, turbos are driven off exhaust.

to reiterate: definately get it! while you're getting the rest of the pieces together, just go over the instructions so you'll know what you're doing already once the last pieces get there. as for an intercooler, just get on ebay.

I would go for it for sure. The turbo can easily be replaced or rebuilt... nice find man! I am real jealous right about now.

Buy it and don't look back. Even if you decide to go another direction, you can rebuild the turbo and easily sell the kit for a grand or so more than you paid.

Go for it. Hit E-bay for an intercooler and maybe a 70mm turbo.
