What is the lowest budget for an LS1 turbo-build
I build a 1960 Bug for friend, or rather together with him.
A local seller offers a LS1-Corvette Engine for 2000€, that seems to be more than fair to us.
That engine is ratet to 350HP and we would like to boost it a bit.
What is the cheapest build AND what would we need?
I am not an expert and so I need some facts like:
Is the rotating assembly of the LS1 forged?
How low should the boost be to change as less as possible from the stock engine and how much HP would it bring.
We do not have a certain amount of power in mind. Anything between 550 to 800HP would be more than fine.
We think a big single hairdryer would do it the best in an old bug and the boost should set in in the mid range as the LS1 got enough low end grunt for a 1000kg Bug, or even lesser.
One important detail is that we run the engine on LPG as it is the cheapest fuel in Austria and it got an octaine rating of 110. We only run the engine on LPG so no pump gas injectors would be needed.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks a lot

Wow, that answer brings me further...
What is in the parts list and what in the stuff list???
BTW, 6000 does not seems to be the cheapest way at all...

If you do everything yourself like welding and stuff then 3-4000 is about the minimum that you will spend and that is buying used parts. There are tons of stuff on this but with just bends, flanges and the three main parts(Turbo,WG and BOV) of the kit then you are at 2000 not even including fuel.
If you are buying a kit then 6000 is a realistic budget.

I think I do not need a fuel pump as the LPG is compressed.
A single setup would mean only one Turbo, one BOV and one Wastegate.
As for the 2000$, how would the list of parts (with circa prices) look like?
Thanks for answers....

heres your answer i have a complete turbo kit for sale in my sig. all you need is to build a competent fuel system and tune it. it is pretty cheap if you consider what you are getting. Hell if you want i have a Griffin radiator, fans, and hoses for a little extra if you need them.

ive got around $1500 in my truck manifold kit including the turbo. $300 or so in fuel system (dual walbros and 75lb injectors), and about $1000 in the motor (stock crank, forged rods/pistons, stock cam and some free 317 6.0 heads a friend gave me)

I have about 1k in mine and i still need a second fuel pump/oil feed/turbo/wastegate/tb/injectors/bov/inter cooler piping......
If you can find some deals and do most of the work yourself your looking at about 2500-3k for a half decent kit!

Here is a cheap turbo kit that will work.Because you have a bug you can go a lot bigger then the one you would use on a C5.
Good luck.

Sounds good, should I change someting on a LS1 if I boost it just mild?
I read an article of the hot rod magazine, they stated that the stock LS1 is a ultra durable engine.
If I do not need to change parts (ecxept injectors and so on of course), your system looks really reasonable on the price.

Thanks to you too, I will try to get the guy on the Corvette Forum, but needs to register first.

gotta get creative!
-snag truck manifolds from the junkyard,
-fab up your own up-pipes,
-get a Holset hx35 or an h1c off of cumminsforum.com for around $250 shipped,
-snag an ebay 38mm wastegate for $40,
-two sets (4 each set) of SRT4 stage 0 injectors for about $60 shipped (they are high impeadance, but my require a harness splice to ev6 connectors)
-piece together an FMIC kit
-misc oil fittings from The Parker store
-EFIlive
-and of course a Wideband
I think that might be the cheapest?

Just for the turbo kit and fueling system and some upgraded valvetrain parts I think you could get away with $4000 if you shop carefully and buy a bunch of used parts. Before my motor went out, my build was only going to cost about $3,500 for everything but before I even got the kit on my motor went to hell so now things are getting expensive.

i wish my turbo build was as cheap as you guys say it is. my turbo was more then what most of you are saying it cost for the whole thing
dont waste your money on a cheapo turbo, in the end it will either break or you will put un-needed stress on the motor. if you take a ebay turbo at 10psi it will not make near as much power as a precision would at the same boost level. so what might take 8lbs to make on a precision, will take 13lbs on a el-cheapo, causing the engine more stress, and hotter IAT, and detonation.
same goes for BOV and wastegate. go cheap, and you chance the part failing and causing alot more money in fixing the motor.
dont know if it been said but, rod bolts, head bolts, valve spring, oil pump, timing chain, might as well do a cam swap, then put 317 heads on there. it adds up really fast.
