Default Cooling requirements on turbo 5.3

I'm working on swapping in a 02 5.3 motor into my 72 Chevelle wagon and was wondering if a stock LS1 radiator and fans would be sufficient once I go single turbo. Will this setup be able to keep temps at a normal range or do I need to go with a larger aluminum radiator? I'm curious to see what cooling mods you turbo guys are doing on these LS motors. Thanks.

Anyone? Are you guys getting by on the factory radiator and fans? I figure I should be fine since most of the time will be spent out of boost. Just trying to get some opinions. Thanks.

115 views and no posts? Are you turbo guys running on the stock radiator or does it not cut the mustard?

stock as in stock for a truck or our fbody stuff, the fbody rads and fans are fine. and i suppose it also depends on what type of power your trying to make, and what ur plans are for the vehicle.

I would be using an LS1 or LT1 rad as they are a good fit for the 68-72 A-bodies. Plans are to hit around 500whp or a bit more with a MP T76.

I run a stock radiator with one of the stock fans in the original location and a small pusher fan on the front of the radiator for the other side. Seems to do pretty well so far, my temps are pretty much what they were pre-FI.

Cool, thanks for the info. Did you take the other fan off the back? Any benefit from having one puller and one pusher fan vs two pullers or did you do this for packaging reasons?

Nah, I cut the factory shroud in half and basically just kept one half of it stock. I wanted to keep the factory fan because of how well they perform, and since my turbo sits to the driver's side I only had to lose one to get the space I needed.

Also, I don't know what your turbo placement is going to be like or how close it'll be to the rad but since mine is very close, I bent up a heat shield that goes between the turbine housing and the rad...seems to block heat transfer pretty well.

I have a SS 71 El Camino with 5.3 zo6 cam and street and performance headers 4.11 gears. Had radiator made for it which is a high efficient radiator for motorhome. fans are run off sensor in a bughole on radiator to turn fans on and fans are seldom on, and this is at lake havasu, arizona..Mike
