Default Who's making 1,000 hp on a stock cast crank?

I'm putting together your typical 5.3L bored to 347 ci with stock manifolds, a T88, forged rods and pistons, yadda yadda. I can't decide whether to spend the extra $1,000 for a forged crank. I see lots of people making tons of power with a stock cast crank, but can it handle 900-1,000 flywheel hp? This motor going in a dedicated drag car, and will only turn 7,000 rpm at most. Assuming the tune is spot on, will a stock crank hold?

Not an LS crank, but it gets the point across...
http://www.insidetopalcohol.com/showthread.php?25424

Short version: Sure, it will take it, and more. The turbo won't stress your crankshaft as much as a 14-71 anyway.

In my very limited experience, the crank doesn't break, bearings spin, piston ring lands break, head gaskets fail... Despite my best efforts, I haven't been able to break a crankshaft in anything yet.

Of course, if your having a pro builder assemble an engine for you, he isn't going to like that idea at all, since it is an unknown... and doesn't allow him to mark up the price much..

I am sure that someone can find you a picture of a broken stock crank, but I can also show you a picture of a broken 4340 crank.

That's good to hear. How much power have you been able to put through stock crank? I know both the 5.3Ls and 6.0Ls have 3.622-inch cranks, but are the castings different in any way that might impact strength? As cheap as 5.3L cores are, I figure I can go through 3-4 motors for the price of one forged aftermarket crank.

My only LS engine is in my wifes GTO, all stock, so don't make your decision based on me. My 496 BBC is only 702 rwhp with a stock converter 4L80E with a china crankshaft, 14-71 blower, 17% underdrive, 87 octane. no intercooler.

98z28cobrakiller on here has a stock crank in a 370 and has been 8.98@153. That et amd mph should tell you how much power he is making and the motor is still going strong.

Harlan ran 8's with a stock LS6 block, stock crank, and ported 317s.

I seriously doubt that I can hurt the stock crank with this turbo as long as the tune is right. Get greedy with the timing or have a mechanical issue that induces detonation, excessively rich/lean condition, well that's another story.

Mike Brown made 1000rwhp+ with an LS2 alum block (stock), stock LS1 crank, good rods/pistons and some AFR 225's with LS6 intake. He went mid 8's I believe.

There are plenty of people that have made 1000hp+ with them. You really don't find any threads of anyone breaking a crank either! They are stout for sure.

There are guys runinng mid low 9's on stock bottom ends. Are they pushing the hell out of the motors, yes but the crank is by no means the weak link. If you are building a nice setup that you plan to run for a few years buy a crank. If this is a stepping stone motor until you decide what you want and plan to step it up in the future just run a stock crank for now.

5.3 & 6.0 crank the same. if anything ... you want one of those.
the 5.7 crank in the camaro & vette I would be a weaker component giving that it is lighter & drilled from factory.

to the OP...It will handle just fine. Look at my build, peeks 20psi and its a stock crank. Dont even worry about that crank...it dont worry about you!

How much boost will you be making to get that level of hp out of the 5.3?
