Default is a s475 to big for stock 5.3?

ok so I'm looking to purchase a turbo that will be good for my current setup and my future set up. current set up is a stock 5.3 with ls6 springs and cam, ls7 lifters and tps push rods. fast 90/90 set up and 60lb injectors through a spec stage 3+ clutch and a stock 6 speed tranny. and future mode include forged bottom end and 317 heads with new custom cam. now for my current setup I would like 500 whp on pump gas and then for the future 700 whp on race gas. now I'm looking for a turbo that will meet my goals and have a recently quick spool time. I was looking at bw s475 cause its roughly $750 new but will it be to big and have terrible spool time? or what turbo would you recomend for my goals and a price range of $900 at.the most thanks.

I ran the S475 on a stock 5.3 a while back. Full came in at around 3700 and was all in very quick. One pass with my combo at 10# boost my 3140# car went 132 in the 1/4. Mine was an auto with a decent stall, with a stick the spool time would be no fun, especially once compression dropped with the 317 heads. Great turbo for strip duty, not so fun for 6-speed street duty on that engine size.

Here is a crappy video:

S400 with 83mm turbine and T4 1.10 housing would be perfect, only $800 on forcedinductions.com

You could have Jose set you up with a 368 with a 83mm turbine that would hit hard with a 6speed. No sense having too much compressor wheel for the 83mm turbine wheel. This would be good to about 680 to the tires. We did 680 to the tires with 35's and a 80e with a 468 and a 1.1 83mm turbine wheel. That was also on a 5.3l and it came in quick!!

Or like stated above a TC unit is nice for packaging and is very affordable. Just not the best above 700whp, and not as robust imo.

hellsbent 10- did you mean a 468 or 368. cause the vehicle you mention you said 468. and that sounds like a good turbo to make 680 to the wheels

also will a s400 as metioned above spool faster? max hp on that turbo?

hey, whats up!, im doing the same built, stock 5.3l,317 heads,60lbs inj, th350 3500stall, with a 75mm t6 1.08ar, you must have goood pcm tune, a good cam that will work well ,when it comes down to tunning im going to be droping it soon into my sc400 hopefully i can bring it down to 3000lbs ,my gears will be 3.27 0r 3.55 . i would invest into ARP bolts.

The 468 hellbents is referring to is an S400 with a 68mm compressor. I still think for $800 new a 75mm S400 with 83mm turbine wheel cant be beat.

i'm thinking my 83mm 1.1ar 80mm t6 turbo is gna choke me before i wanna so if anyone wants to buy a brand new forced inductions built with hybrid garrett 80mm 115mm wheel, i've got 1 and i had the turbine housing coated in titanium coating, looks like chrome, copper coated inside.ill take 900 for it. ive gta an old s475 with 1.32ar and big turbine, ill have it built into a 88 by f.i. instead.

That video was at 5lbs boost. The car had 235 radial tires and I made one pass at 10lbs boost before I tore it apart. It ran 10.90@132 driving it off the line to a 2.2 60'

Nice thing about most of the popular borg warner turbos, is they have full twin scroll hotsides and can be used with a quick spool valve if your not happy with the mid range with the turbo. They are also easy to upgrade when you're ready to upgrade.

Bad thing is they are HUGE, close to 50lbs and dwarf a gallon of milk for all the t6 versions (s465-s480). They also have a 5" outlet, so packaging it, and trying to reduce the downpipe down to get it past the engine in a little rx7 is going to be more of a challenge, not impossible, but more of a hassle than slotting in a smaller t4 turbo.

Sounds like smaller turbo like tc76 would be ideal for you, but a mp t70 could still be substituted if the budget calls for it.

Probably, you're talking about a T4 right not a T6? I have that turbo but 75mm compressor, T4 1.10 83mm turbine on an LQ4, with the stock cam it will build 5-6psi in park just revving it in the driveway, I wouldnt have believed it if I didnt see it. I cant imagine the 5.3 would spool much slower. I dont know when it spools rpm wise since my converter flashes pretty high, but if Im cruising along at any rpm and floor it, it is at full tilt instantly. You wont be disappointed, but like others have said, a TC76 or TC78 would be really good too. The S400 T4 83mm turbine is $800 and I think the TC is about $1000, they are pretty close price wise.

That s400 that's mentioned for 800 is a t6. If you look below the chart on that site it says "add $199 for g4 flange". Just saying...
