Default Need a suggestion for a converter and tranny.....

Aight.... after trying to shove ~500hp through a 4l60e in a 5000# truck and burning out half of the transmission...... About a year later im ready to start fixing the next weak link.

I have a factory 4l80e.... What can/should I do to beef it up or make it more durable? Im only pushing about 500 bhp at the minute, Better clutches / servos? Or should the factory piece be fine?

And... I need a converter, im considering one from yanks made to mate the lr4 to the 80e, about a oh... 3200 - 3400 stall.

The truck itself is procharged with the boost starting to come on at 3k.

As for putting the 80e in, im going to rebuild my crossmember with some half inch steel plate to locate the mount point properly, and, buy the damn conversion cable from speartech, and grab the hptuner **** to retune the pcm for it. I would have my old tuner do it.... but, that would be a 1300 mile trip.

Oh, and this is a daily driver as well.

Opinions? suggestions? Any ideas of how to save money and maximize durability?

Call Greg @ FTI for the converter. I would go with a little more stall. Like 4k.

4k seems a little bit excessive though, Its mainly used for driving around, Im only turning the engine to 6500 or so with low gears. Or, is the converter built tight enough for good street driving?

a high stall built as tight as you can get it, yes its badass on the street, thats how my last converter was in my DD and it was a great double duty converter. general opinion is the 4l8e can handle around 750whp after a simple hydraulics upgrade, where most seem to go with teh Transgo HD2 kit for $120. after that the hard parts start needing upgrades.

I just picked up a bone stock 80 for mine too, but ive been researching witch tranny to go with for a while looking at weaknesses, the 80 is just beastly by nature.

I have an SC3000 in my car. I don't care for a high stall for my street car. I would think the weight of a truck would make a loose stall feel even worse. Yank list a 3400 as the highest stall choice (for their truck converters) even with blown or turbo applications

If you aren't going to tear into it, at least put a transgo hd-2 kit, otherwise the 3rd gear clutches go away at about 500hp.
