Default ~TransAm Truck manifold build - Round 3 ~

1999 Trans Am.

Round 1: was this setup
5.3/truck manifolds/MPGT45
Stock 5.3 , gasoline 93 octane, w/ 317 heads and a 224/224 .580/.580 112 cam. TCI streetfighter converter. Spun a rod bearing in the 5.3L. This combo in my Nova ran 10.30 @ 131mph 1.55 60ft. 3660lbs In my Transam it made one pass while spinning a bearing. 10.76 @ 128mph 1.83 60ft 3600lbs.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Round 2: Same turbo setup as above. This time a stock LQ4 with an LS6 cam with E-85. Custom Midwest 3500 stall. It was crazy compared to the above setup but developed a knock when the engine was warm. Beat it quite a bit and never blew up. Not sure what the knock is the engine is still in car, GT45 turbo kit is all sold. Using this engine in the car to mock up the new setup.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Round 3
370ci, all forged new parts, 9.8:1 compression, ported 317s, as of now im using the LS6 cam still. Will run on E-85. New turbo is a Precision PT76GTSH.
And im using 2.5" mandrel bent stainless tubing instead of the Sch 10 pipe elbows. Only cause i got them for cheap. Looking for around 800whp and spool like instantly. Daily driver street car.

**EDIT - Picked up some 120# injectors, driver box, and a TU1 cam.

Started this last night. Screwed my angle up where the T4 flange goes so it had a huge gap... no biggie, fixed it. Also im not all comfortable using the thin wall tubing so I added some redundant supports (gussets). Waiting on my wastegate to get here to finish it.

Fixing the gap I screwed up on .

Anyone else use something like this? A big block of steel to bolt on while welding so the flange dont warp?

My supports. Basically a redundant weld to keep stress from concentrating on the weld joint. I only put them on the top sides against the direction the weight would be pulling.

Thanks all....

The manifolds actually weld just like steel. Must be a high grade of cast iron??
A lot of people say you have to preheat... that is only for when you are welding really thick stuff it helps a lot, these are thin so its not needed.
Post heating is important only because you want to let it all cool together slowly. Welding 2 different types of metal together you might have one cool faster than the other....that leads to a crack where they meet. So bringing it all up to a hot temp and then cooling it all very slowly helps. Ive thrown stuff in a bucket of sand before to make it cool super slow. But I didnt do that on these....a lot of cast iron you have to watch that. There is a whole thread on this with lots of pics from others as well.

Looking good so far.

The new Precision turbo is rated at about 1200hp?

What size injectors will you be running?

Thanks. I think 1100hp. Its a PT76GTSH I think the "H" means ported housing, Precisions website doesnt tell you anything and I got it off another forum. It could be 1200hp ???
Going to run 80lbs injectors. I had my 60lbs ones maxed out before. I think the 80s will work.

These parts showed up... My dog Bomber couldnt wait till I got home and tore into the BOV box. lol. Luckily it was all there and in tact.
Probably go out and do the downpipe and wategate pipe tonight.

The culprit...My 6 month old land shark..."Bomber".

Mounted it all back up tonight. Didnt get **** done except line up where the down pipe is going to go. Stuck an elbow on the cold side. Intercooler and piping might be here tomorrow. And a pic of my shiny mirror 3" elbows.

Thanks. My welder is a Miller Syncrowave 200. I actually hate welding thin stainless....lol. Aluminum I like.

I think there was a build thread on here, its been a few years and I cant find it. Theres some old pics of the nova here and turbo setup here. Speaking of... I cant wait to start in on it again when this car is done. Should make this one look like a horse drawn carriage.

I also have a Syncrowave 200. I on the other hand love welding stainless tubing.

I have had good results with aluminum so far, but still dialing it in.

How do you set yours up for aluminum intercooler piping? Particularly the pulse feature.

I think they are about the same. I just like aluminum because its so forgiving.

I dont use the pulse feature. Simply switch it to AC, for 1/8" alum i set it around 150-160 Im not sure what im actually welding at, I font floor it. It helps to have the gas up higher than stainless welding.
