Damn that's a tradgedy.

Shawn, are the sleeve's thin in the 454 or something? I imagine his motor came with a good forged piston, so what about it isn't built for boost? Needs aftermarket sleeves?

Besides a wrist pin sliding out, or a faulty casting... What would cause that? The piston surface dont look bad really.

need more pics... cant tell **** from that pic.

Im guessing thinner cylinder walls on the bored out LSX block to get the 454 cubes??

The combination of a thin cylinder wall due to the max bore to achieve 454 along with a bit of detonation will do that in no time. The short piston skirts don't help either...

The 454 bore is 4.185... I guess that's too thin for boost and it is a tragedy. I never thought a LSX block would do that. A Darton sleeved LS2 (4.125) would be better then that.

4.185 bore is wayyyyyyyyyyy to thin for boost. We make 44 to 50lbs boost evey pass but the bore is only 4.125. Some of the early blocks are know for core shift, combine that with a large bore, and well the pictures show it. Do you know if this was a early block or a latter block?

Guys, give the dude a break.. I mean, Dr Phil said it'd be ok to run FI on an 11:1 engine with 4.185 bore!

The later gen blocks are still known for core shift. This is 4.125", notice #1.

As stated above, looks like core shift played a part in this situation. You would think, even with a 4.185 bore, it would last a while.

Just throw some JB weld on there and it'd be good to go...
..Looks like a lil stress fracture, no biggie... :

Helicoil- that core shift is very interesting, what combination of nonsense would cause this to happen to such a strong block?

Wow coreshift sounds like a likely culprit! It would be interesting to mic the wall right where that hole is and see how thick it is, it doesnt look real thick from the picture but you cant really tell by the angle.

That's a tough loss and I hope they make some good on it.
