Im sure what your hearing is associated with lower compression. So it depends on the dish of the piston and if the heads have been milled.

What I understand of such things is that it's all in the tune.

How do you tune an 8.5:1 engine to not be a dog out of boost?

i have an iron 347 with je -2cc valve relief pistons, stock 317's and .060 gaskets. compression should be about 9.3/9.4-1.

317's with stock 5.3's with dish pistons will give you really low compression, not flat tops

It would really depend on the type of FI. Turbo wise you could run a QSV. E85 would help spool too. I imagine a t4 frame turbo with The right ar would be decent and start seeing boost at less than 2k (efr 9180 or comp oilless 72mm maybe) ....ofcourse load and other factors would come into play and the fact boost is just a measure of restriction id pay to get the right FI setup... so IMHO by pickin the right parts it wouldnt be that bad.
