Default ? Re: rear end gear ratios and rear mount turbos

I am currently running a Moser 12 bolt rear end with 3.90 gears. There is no boost in 1st gear, 2nd gear and on hit boot around 3,000-3,500rpms.

Would there be any difference if i was to run a 3.42 gear set or a 3.23? If so what should i expect to see/feel?

The problem when running low gears with turbos is that you are not loading the motor down. Puttin a load on it causes it to work and give you that exhaust heat you need to spin the turbo(s).

You put 3.23's in it you will put a load on i and you will get boost. You running 4L60E I take it? I set mine up so I can leave it in second and it will
shift its self at 6300 and then I shift it myself.

Lower gears are not the answer to all. I raced another LT1 SC'ed car that was auto with 4.10's or something like that. I smoked him off the line and walked away from him. He just sat there and spinning the tires while I hooked up and was gone.

I don't have a boost leak...got that all sorted out.

I have a 6spd manual with 3.90 gears and am ripping through 1st gear before boost can build...even though when i shift the blow off valve still makes it's distinctive sound

I am wondering if a 3.42, 3.23 or a 2.73 gear would be more beneficial to my car with it's setup?

yeah the gears are too short, throw on a tall *** tire and 3.23s for a trial run and see what happens.

turbo cars love to sit in gear and eat up mph.

also big turbo manual transmission with short gears is the worst thing you could do as far as lag and powerband for a turbo car.

throw 2.55 gears, 28 inch drag radial and a th400 in there with a 3000 stall and youll have boost whenever you want and youll do 75mph in 1st gear lol

I agree with denmah i have 2.73s with a small 3000 stall and that thing just sits at 5,000 no matter where i punch it and pulls.

Try starting in 2nd gear and seeing how that works for you. That would be the equivalent of swapping in a 3.08 gear set in a 1998 w/ 6-speed tranny and 3.90 rear. It will feel slow in the 60 ft, but will pull like a MF through the whole gear because the turbo will build boost better.

I have never run a turbo car with any gear shorter than 355's they always work great in these fox body cars I have with 273's .they get on the boost like nobody's business!
