Default 5.3 running Microsquirt 2, waste spark and fuel *1-8-13 updates*

ive been testing a Microsquirt 2 module running the stock coil on plugs, reading the stock crank trigger only on the gen 3 motor firing the coils in waste spark and also running the injectors.

making some good headway today.

going to drive the car around tomorrow and see how i do

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KU2Ek...ature=youtu.be

figured some of you might find it interesting knowing it can be done.

neat that you dont need the cam to be read at all, makes cam options pretty large.

yeah i have both wiring harnesses laying in the car right now so its hard to see, but here is the whole unit outside of the car.

thats the harness that plugs into all the stock stuff and the ecu and fuse panel all at once.

ecu fuse panel and relay

the ecu itself is very small, about the size of most smart phones.

wow, that is a compact harness and a small ecu. that would probably drop 10lbs off a car.

what is the cost of it, and was it prewired or did you have to make the whole harness, sourcing your own cop connectors for example?

also, why the microsquirt and not megasquirt?

the harness was not pre wired, not sure of the cost yet, a friend built this one and we are testing it, i might build some after this. and see what they cost to build. there are some ebay stores and etc that sell those COP stock connectors, i might try to get enough junkyard ones to build another etc.

the microsquirt 2 v3 sealed unit and extra firmware is perfect for doing this, and you only have to do simple mod inside the case for the crank pickup and then you can wire it easily for 8cyl waste spark, the other units can do it, but this will definitely be the most cost effective

So is the MICROsquirt also doing the fuel? Or do you have a separate megasquirt doing the fuel?

The only issue with running crank signal only, is injector size. Once you start to go large, you will have fuelling issues at low rpm as the injectors are always firing at least twice per cycle instead of once per cycle as with proper sequential injection.

Not a huge deal though ( I run mine like this, simply because I couldnt be arsed sorting a cam trigger lol )
But also because of that, and the fact decent large injectors hadnt appeared when I needed them, I run 2 inj per cylinder.

Maybe premature for this question but how do you like it for controlling the fairmont? Do you think this will replace the ms1/msd as your "go to" setup? I only ask because as my inspiration for going the ms1/msd route im curious do you think the microsquirt is easier or simply another option?

well i had it out for a while today and honestly it was doing great, i would like for this to be the replacement for our msd and ms1 setup because its less wires and has more features.

i did some nasty 3rd gear burnouts on 20psi tonight and didnt have any issues other than stalling sometimes when coming to a stop wich was in the fuel map. and i did clear that up.

this motor is really smoking alot now lol! i should get the pistons tuesday and refresh her and then have it back out that weekend

This plastic cased microsquirt, and up coming new plastic cased ms3 use the newer input signal conditioner, very reliable, and user friendly(no more screw driver adjustments to capture the incoming crank signal)

This harness and the microsquirt are a really cool compact setup, and a good test for the harness of the new MS3,and also a glipse at packaging on the new Megasquirt. (basicly looks like two of these stuck together)

I have a write up on how to build this harness(with improvement from Denmah's testing) but need to get it more organized before posting it somewhere. Also going to have a basic ls1 24tooth "start" file to begin with.

And a write up on using another one of these, to control a 4l80e, with CANbus comms between the two, or between it and an MS3.(same as I am using on my twin turbo wagon)

Man, I envy you... I'm a hell of a follower of your projects! I wondered if you were using MS. I had looked into it and debated it vs a stock 01+ car ECU.

john (atomic) has a wiring diagram for this that when everything is good he will post up
he might have one right now that is up to date.

there is only one internal mod you need to do for the Micro2v3 to run 4 coil outputs 8cyl waste spark...

and that is adding a
1k ohm resistor from the 12v to the Vref
and two
4.7k ohm resistors from the 5v ref to.. Acceleration LED and warmup LED i believe,
that gives them 5v trigger references to be able to fire the coils.

i did them like this in the back of the board, it was super easy.
this can also be done in the wiring

Awesome. Its hard to tell size with the shrink on there but are they 1/4 watt or 1/2 watt? Or something different
