Default New best 78 Turbo Trans Am, cam only 5.3 rear mount Turbo 10.22@140.98

Had my best pass of the year today at London Dragstrip. Got the converter loosened up so was able to launch with a little boost off the line. This pass was about 6-7lbs of boost. I was working up to 14-15lbs to see where the tires would hold, but the rain came so I couldn't get anymore runs in. Still pretty happy for a 4100 lead sled of a car! Not bad for a stock sounding 1978 Trans Am.
(Recap-- Stock 31k mile bottom end 5.3 with Cam, ls9 head gaskets and studs, rear mount Comp G turbo)..
This is a really short track, so you can see I let and hit the brakes a little before the end of the 1/4 mile. Its a SHORT track to stop!!

Wow, that thing runs great! If you don't mind too much, I have a few questions for you:

1) What cam, transmission, and rear end gear are you running?

2) Are you running an FMIC and/or water/methanol injection?

3) What size exhaust tubing are you running to the turbo, and what size cold side tubing are you running back to the front?

Thanks in advance for anything you can provide!

Sure man.... here ya go...

1.) Its a Comp Cam, don't know the part number off the top of my head but its a fairly mild cam in all honesty. Second the trans is a built TH400, the rear is a ford 9" with a 3.23 posi in it.

2.) I do run a FMIC, but also use Methanol injection as well.

3.) I have hooker manifolds on it going back to a Y-pipe into a 3" pipe all the way back to the turbo. Coming back up the cold side its a 3" pipe all the way until the outlet of the Intercooler...then it switches to a 4" into the intake.

Thanks for the compliment man. Any other questions feel free to ask. It is a stock bottom end 5.3 with about 31k on it.

Here's the build thread on the car if anyone is interested :

https://ls1tech.com/forums/forced-in...lts-759hp.html

It's a comp oilless turbo roughly a 78mm.. The 5.3 is an 04 model I believe. I'll have to double check that to be sure though.
Thanks for the compliments. It's really just getting lined out. I think it's got some 9's in it once I get a little better at the launch with this new converter.

Lol...thanks man it's like 4200lbs, so it's a LOT of weight to get rolling!! but once it rolls out, it gets down! sounds like a stock old school trans am until the boost comes on. Then it sounds like a little jet engine! :-P

Awsome car man
I dont want to sound like a wise *** but
4,200 #`s ? do you weigh 0ver 500lbs? or is the trunk full of cement?

The car should weigh 3500 with a full iron pontiac motor in it.

That's a really good time and mph. What does it make power up to with that turbo, what rpm are you shifting at?

Wait and that run was only 7lbs? Or was that just the launch?

Hey Off... no worries man I believe they weighed 3820 from the factory with the Pontiac block. My steel 5.3 with aluminum heads will be lighter then that of course but when you add Roll cage, ford 9", TH400, all the piping for the rear mount turbo, the turbo, methanol tank, intercooler, full sound proofing in the cab and in the trunk, 4th gen dash, 4th gen center console, electric windows, and everything else it really does add up to 4200 lbs with me in the car. (I'm 195lbs)... Its surprising but I promise, i'm not pulling your leg on that one!
Sprayed.... that was with 7lbs at launch. I wanted to try it again at 9-10lbs and see if it would hold but rain came so I didn't get another shot at it. My first attempt was launching at 15lbs and it blew them off pretty bad. I think they will hold 10-11 though! I'm shifting at 6500rpm. Its a 3.23 gear so i'm crossing the line right at optimal rpm range with the TH400.

Thanks for checking it out and hope everyone has a Happy holiday season!

Billy

It was just the launch that was on 7-8lbs... the rest of the run was on 19-20lbs. Its the stock k-member. Just some aftermarket motor mount plates are all it took to get it in there. (Have to run the F-body oil pan on it though). The exhaust manifolds are the ones from Hooker.

Thanks,

Billy
