Default E85 vs Alky

I always run E85 and have been very successful with it. However, I have 160lb injectors, and two A1000 pumps that flow more than enough to run methanol. I was planning to do some testing and if things work out it would be nothing for me to drive my car on pump gas E85 ( they sale it everywhere her and cheap) and to race it on pure methanol. I have been told that the car will run much harder and have better throttle response.

On E85 I run very conservative timing. I run no more than 13-14 degrees at full boost. It always worries me to go any higher than that on E85. I do not run an intercooler. With methanol I don't think I would be afraid to go ahead and ramp the timing up to 18 degrees or even more.

My question is how much would you increase your fuel values going from E85 to methanol. I would hate to mess it up on the first pass. I was thinking about adding 25 percent across the board. And start from there.

I don't plan on doing this for a while but have thought about it later in the year if I don't get my 5 sec pass. I use HPtuners.

I would start with about 50% more in the high load areas. Get the fueling straightened out then start putting the timing in. You could more then likely run more timing on E85 if the fueling is correct. Either way you will pick up substantial power on the Alky.

At a base press. of 43 the 160s will only carry you to about 900hp too.

900hp would be fine with me. Just whatever it takes to run high 5's. I want to run our 6.0 index class. I am going to see where I can get on the E85 first but if I don't reach my goal and am close I wanted to be prepared to run methanol and try again. Thanks for the advice.

Thumbs up

I'm still learning Efi Alky, but I know amazing things can be done with methanol. Top Alcohol 526 cube motors run north of 55 psi boost, 12.5 cr, and 28* timing (some over 30*) All with the good old roots blower and no intercooler. The power is there for sure once you get through the learning curve.

I don't think those A1000 pumps are going to cut in on Methanol, don't think they were designed to be run with it, and I don't think they will have enough volume at pressure.

Methanol is alot more work than E85, that is one reason we switched to e85 in the second fuel system on Mike's car, and my Wagon. They both use to be dual fuel with an 87/methanol combos.

Altho, the logs we had on the methanol and no intercooler were way cooler than the E85 and no intercooler.

I am not trying to steer you away from it, but it will be more work than the E85.

I agree if 900hp is the goal it will be easy to do on E85 non-intercooled. With the correct fueling you will be running near full timing too.

the only direct comparison I have with e85 and methanol , nothing else changed, is stall.

on methanol, the stall increased 300 rpms and it revved quicker, so methanol definitely makes more torque than e85.

as hellbent said, you can run high timing with e85 too. I would definitely flow your pumps at boosted pressure to know exactly how many gph or lph they will flow because you dont want that to not be enough and grenade the motor.

I had issues with milky oil on methanol that I never had on e85 so that is something else to consider.

finally, I would at least 50 percent more fuel everywhere( including cranking fuel, accel enrichment, etc) to go to methanol

good luck man. once you go methanol you might not go back

Thanks all. No hurry to do this. I just want to be prepared in case I don't hit my goal. If I hit 5 anything I am done. I am very close but have definitely made a bunch of changes. However, I do think these are all things that will make the car quicker. Alky will be near the end of the season if and only if I can't get it done on pump E85.
