Default High horsepower turbo differential options and opinions

I am at the point where I need to make a decision as to which rear differential to get for my 8.8 rear end and wanted some information as to what others are running in sub-10 second cars that have both STREET and track/strip use.

The more I read about spools on the street the more mixed reviews I get. I have not heard much about lockers.

There are quite a few local guys that run spools (myself included) and you just have to take the good with the bad. we are run 15" wheels though. The added sidewall on the tires seem to help absorb some of the shock. I never even really notice it unless I am doing a three point turn or trying to navigate through a tight parking lot.

I have a spool in mine and hate it.
Not a DD but 99% street car and it is killing my drag radials, im going to a wavetrac posi when the funds allow it.

The spool is only bad if making tight turns around parking lots. I like it because its predictable when it spins the tires. The rear will kick slightly right and stay there. With a posi or locker they tend to want to go left, then right and back and forth. Mine is in a strange 12 bolt. I roll around on stock speed lines and street tires for now and have drag radials on 15's that I swap out. Drive a car with one before you make the call.

My main concern is tearing stuff up with the spool. Not sure how valid it is, but you hear horror stories. I have pretty much all solid mount control arms and bushings in the rear of my little mustang. Not a lot of slop back there.

I have 33spline strange axles and of course no c clips. If the rear has all good parts then I don't see the problem. Is it hard in parts, yes, but as long as you aren't turning figure 8's all the time then it should be ok.

Lincoln locker in the Fairmont. I really don't notice it and it has held up to many, many low 10 second passes and hard launches. Pulled the wheels 3 times with it last week on the anti-lag.

Dont even notice the spool unless i am at full lock, short wheelbase car though

Mine acts the same as 72 describes aswell. If it spins it will step right a bit and stay there, very predictable

I'm going to be using a spool on my 8.8 after reading a lot of mixed reviews too. I accept that it's going to wear the tires faster, and tight turning will be more of a challenge. I like not worrying about both tires delivering maximum traction at the strip unless something breaks, but anything can break. its just a personal preference. If you put a ton of miles on the car then maybe a locker or limited slip would be more suitable for you application. If not run a spool they are cheap, and guaranteed to give 100% power to both tires.

If all you want are 9's in a Mustang, then the typical 31 spline aftermarket axles, c-clip eliminators, and pretty much any 31 spline differential will suffice, except the older design Auburn units (they explode). I've even know of OEM 28 spline diffs with aftermarket axles living into that power range.

I ran a spool in my fox mustang on the street a long time ago and did not have a problem with it other than trying to pull into parking spots or make sharp u turns.

Having had all the different options in the past, Ive got a 2003/2004 OEM Cobra differential in my 8.8. The Cobra diff is 31 spline with heavy duty clutch packs and spring, and is very driveable. They are about $200 brand new on corral.

What do you mean about not being able to power through turns? Just curious. Does it unlock a wheel or something?

The Wavelock would be nice but they are serious money! Honestly I am shooting for 8s in this thing which is the point where lots of people say the locker will not hold up. That is why I was curious what some of the guys here were running. Not sure why the spool makes me so nervous!

I have a wavetrac in mine and love it, no more poping and jerking when making tight turns in parking lots. Also after the spool eats up a couple sets of drag radials you could have just bought the wavetrac in the first place. Give Bob at brute speed a call he can hook you up with a pretty good deal on one!

I have a trutrac in my 1/2 ton Silverado (8.6 same as 8.5 10 bolt)that is lifted with 33" 13.5" wide Mickey Thompson Baja ATZ with a 402" supercharged making over 17 lbs of boost and it holds up to that. Drives nice and no chatter around corners.

Well initially I don't think I will have the spare cash to put anything but hoping by late spring/early summer to have something to go in there. But I am pretty sure the stock posi will be toast right from the get go!
