Default Proper head stud install technique

Can you guys give some tips on the proper installation of these China specials?

ARP says 80 lbs for the 7/16 studs and 5/16 get 25 lbs. Would you guys use these figures??

IF you have all the same length studs gen 4 engine I would not be scared to go 75
if gen 3 i have snapped off one of the long bolts trying to get to 75. so I have been stopping at 70 on gen 3 engines

I have the pre '04/different length jobs. I just check the ebay sellers recommendations and they have 65-70lbs and 23lbs along with ARP lube listed. Looks like they recommend lower to avoid issues.

I got mine from there also, $66.00 shipped. Seem like nice quality. Some burrs on the threads from what appears to be the studs banging each other during shipping, but not a big deal. I think its a good deal - we'll see.

Hey Matt,

The proper procedure for torquing the LS1 head studs is as follows:

If using moly:
First pass 25lbft second pass at 50lbft, and finally a 3rd at 70lbft
Install the 5 smaller bolts and torque them to 22lbft

If using motor oil:
First pass 30lbft second pass at 60lbft, and finally a 3rd at 80lbft
Install the 5 smaller bolts and torque them to 28lbft

These instructions should generally be the same as found with ARP studs. When in doubt, their torque specs may be applied to the studs we sell. Let us know if you have any other questions, we can be reached by email or by phone!

Thanks,

I can certainly go more but the consensus was ~70 ftlbs I thought. I dont see myself running more than 15-16psi. I would think the higher you torque them the more bore distortion could happen.

ARP calls for 80, and the thread pitch is the same as the Alper studs. I'm thinking you are giving up head gasket clamping by only going to 70. JMO

Heck, I went to 80lbs - and she held

Probably should add another 5 lbs after a couple of heat cycles and letting everything get to know each other.

I went with 80. 25-50-80, no problems.

I used the ARP lube with KMJ studs.
