Default piston blew up? motor options/thoughts

what would cause this?it was cylinder 8 that went.was at a cruise yesterday around town and was getting on the highway and all the sudden herd somthing break and that was it.got it home and dropped the pan and thats what i found.running e85 12-14 boost on a 03-04 6.0.just switched from a 6 speed to a th400 also and first time out.never did any hard pulls or anything just slow cruising and some into it a little.could it be caused by it being way to lean from switching trans?my tuner said there was no need for retune?

When I swapped my tune was all screwed up as soon as I started the car it was evident, the part throttle tables had to be adjusted with the EFI live 3 bar OS not sure what you were using to tune but that was my experience. My car was pretty lean, did you have a wide band on the car by chance?

Even if the tune was off a little you said you were not in the throttle, right?

No pics, no data = difficult to make an assessment.

You detonated for some reason or another. Doesn't take much on the OEM parts. Would need to know your timing/AFR compression etc to make a guess. Could be bad gas as well. I've seen some pretty low ethanol percentages at our pumps in KS.

The load on the engine between the two transmissions is very different, most likely this is what ended your piston's life. Even at part throttle and light loads it can detonate and rattle the piston and with stock pistons it won't take long. Any change in the car the tune needs to be looked at always better to be safe than sorry. The bent rod is likely a result of the piston cocking in the cylinder after breaking.

Well i will get a further look when i get it out and torn down...on the other side of it what do u guys think about throwing a 4.8 in the mean time?would it be worth it?its a 2006 with 115k on it for 450 bucks.or should i look into somthing else?i can pick up another 2005 6.0 right now with 72k on it for 1400 though

Personally i've never seen a piston eat itself when not under a load. Unless the motor was built seriously wrong that just shouldn't happen. I'd guess whenever the last time you were on it hard it damaged the piston/rod and I just happened to let loose when you were cruising.

How much power do you want to make? 4.8's (esp 2005+) have been proven to make 700+whp semi easily. And they are more rev happy. I'd give the 4.8 a shot if thats enough power to make you happy.

I'm curious about this.. so the tune can change from 6speed to auto? I understand the loads will very but in wat way can it do that? I'm planning on doing the same move. Thanks
