Need info on "6 bolt/4 bolt" motor. General nooB info.
Some know I posted info about my front mount turbo setup i'm planning.
My question is, I read about 6 bolt only for big boosted applications. I was planning to use my LS1 aluminum block for a front mount, 76/91 setup, would be happy anywhere between 800-1000hp. But, my LS1 is a 4 bolt right? What blocks are 6 bolt setups? And do different heads go with different bolt patterns?

Any factory LSx block utilizes a 4-Bolt per cylinder setup. The Chevrolet Performance LSX, the ERL Performance SuperDeck I & II, the World Products Warhawk, the Dart LS-Next, the Dart Billet, the RHS, and the LSM Billet are all 6-bolt setups. You can use 4-Bolt heads on 6-Bolt blocks, and vise versa.

I ask because I hear of boosted LS's lifting the heads up off the motor regularly, and using a 6 bolt head should be manditory.
What heads can I use, that are 6 bolt? 317?

Yes you can utilize 6-bolt heads, and no, there are no 6-bolt 317 heads. AFR, TFS, Mast, AllPro, all aftermarket manufacturers have a 6-bolt options. A 4-bolt setup can live to 1200hp if tuned properly.

Well Gm offers the LSX series heads that are 6 bolt (LS3,LSA,LS7). They use factory components they are just 6 bolt. Really the only reason to get 6 bolt now is if you plan on upgrading the block in the future. I guess if your buying new then getting them now would not hurt.

I've found 6 bolt heads to not be needed at my power level of 950rwhp. I've done some long pulls with it too. You want a head with a thick deck and no thin spots. Cheapest option I believe is 317's. I went with AFR 225's. You've gotta be conservative with the tune. What you get away with on the dyno isn't real world.

But you still only have 4 bolt clamping force with 6 bolt heads on your 4 bolt block.
