Default John Deer Hy gard Trans Fluid?

I have been running O'reilly's 303 fluid in my Power Glide for about 6 months. We just rebuilt it again and there is no issues with the fluid. I was curious how much better the John Deer fluid is at tightening up the convertor over the O'reillys. I also wanted to know if you guys are using the regular Hy gard or the Low Viscosity?

Thanks.

My broken trans was planetaries as usual. I was just curious to know since I have to put new fluid in if it was worth the switch. It is only about $17 a gallon here so figured I would try it if it would tighten up any over the O'reilly's.

for what i know the hyguard low Viscosity is the same grade as a standard automatic trans. oil

if you want to tighten up the converter use the normal Viscosity

it should tight it something around 150 to 200 rpm

this is what i found around

I using that oil in my GN 87 th200 4r no lockup

IMO

Both work good. Deere fluid does tighten it up a bit. I still change mine after every race.

I noticed it tightened it up more when it was cold, but once it warms up, I almost couldn't tell a difference. I had hoped it would make it slip less and lower the RPMs through te traps, but it didn't really change it enough to notice it on the datalog. And yes, I went from type f to the thicker john deer stuff, not the low viscocity stuff. Low viscocity Jd will stall pretty much the same as type f.

It is a great fluid and handles heat a lot better than type f. It takes a beating better.

And I'm sure you make 1500-2000 WHP. Lol. Bumping into the beams at 30psi is slightly harder on trans fluid than a 5psi footbrake launch. Hahaha.

I just had a th400 put in my 03 cobra and I put regular viscocity hygard in it. I never read a bad thing about it. I havent had a chance to drive it yet because of the salt/snow or id give you a better impression. The shop that put the trans in for me had never even heard of it before which doesnt seem too uncommon.

I use the cheapo tractor fluid J20-c rated. Works great. i saw about a 200-300rpm gain on the brake when I used it on a converter that was slipping 16% or so. My new trans/converter have always used hygard so I have no real comparison. Around 5-6% slip.

I run the same fluid the whole year...100+ passes lots of street miles. And I'm pretty mean to my fluid. Big boost t-brake launches off the 2-step, Sitting at the light for a good 2-3 seconds building boost etc. I do watch my temps though and they never go much over 230 on a run. I don't hot lap either.

IMO Any of the J20-C rating tractor hydraulic fluids will perform the same as Hygard for less money. I've run both. I'm told the tractor hyd fluid has a higher heat rating than your standard Dex trans fluid as well. This seems to be on par with the drag racers I know that said they would burn up type F fluid after 10-20 passes, yet the hygard would stay "fresh" all year. Also told that hot lapping the trans at 220-250* didn't seem to be an issue with hygard. I toss in a quart or 2 of typeF for color.

I'd say the man benefit is cost.

Thanks Gents. I was a little worried about the "change after each race" comment. lol. I street drive mine a ton. The O'reilly's has worked fine so I will try it and see if it does anybetter. At least I will have something to compare it to.

Thanks again.

5 gallons for $37

Think I paid about twice that for hy-gard at a John Deer dealership. Still cheaper than buying a quality ATF by the QT.

Yes Ryan we found it will tighten up the converter by 200-300rpm in some cases. The only thing bad is that it has a unique stink to it when it gets a little burned from being on the brake lol.

I am going to switch to the Hy-Gard from the Walmart Supertech ATF and see how it does. My converter could use a little tightening and if this works, great.

Sorry to ask a different question, but is it imperative that you completely flush the trans, converter lines of the regular ATF when making this switch?

When using this fluid, did the converter get tight by just a little? I am considering using this exact fluid. Would just like to know if the stall went down for you? I guess it would since the viscosity is thicker than dexron.

If it works in our 500+ horse tractors for over a thousand hours of full load lugging, I think it 'll work in a car haha

You’re the first person I’ve heard of that actually burnt it! What kind of temps were you seeing when you started to smell it?

MSDS says:
Hy-gard has a 420*F flash point.
Chevron brand non-SYN Dex3 is at 352*F.
Mobil Dex IV full synthetic is 428*F.

Yes it tightened up the converter a bit. Same as Hy-gard near as I could tell.
