Default boost and timing advice

Hey guys. I have done a lot of research and reading. As you can see from the pictures, my project is complete and is running. I need to loosen up the converter and I need some gears in the rear end, the 4.56 are not cutting it anymore. My build is a bone stock 6.0 out of a 2005 Chevy pickup, it is a borg warner S480 blow thru carb and air-to-air intercooler. It is primarily a street car that gets used for drag racing every now and then. Even though it looks like there is a lot of drag car in it, it gets driven on the street a lot.

I read a lot of the post about stock 6 liter builds, timing and boost levels for pump gas, but I am just wondering if I could get some updated information on what everyone is doing out there.

Right now I am running 5 lbs of boost, my base timing is 29 degrees and at 5 lbs, I am 24 degrees on pump gas.

If you want to know anymore information about the car, I can give it to you. I know I am forgetting a lot right now.

What advice are you looking for exactly? Your timing at 5 PSI is high but not really too bad. Are you planning on turning it up? What to?

I am a horsepower junkie so yes I would like to turn it up. I was thinking 10 psi on the street and 15 psi at the track. This has been a 5 year project for me and it is unreal to have it done and be driving it.

Your timing should drop considerably on pump gas. At 10 PSI I would be running 18 degrees or less. At 15 PSI I would probably be running 14 degrees or less. That's IF you had water/meth injection.

I am pulling 1 degree per lb of boost the way it sits now so if i put a 10lb spring in it would be 19 degrees now

That seems a bit high to me. At least for pump gas. 95% of all engine failures related to turbos are when people get greedy on the tune. 50% of that is too much boost, the rest is too much timing.

You can still make tons of power and be conservative on the timing. Most guys running 15+ PSI are between 12 and 14 degrees from 14 PSI on up.

My motor when it was stock at 14lbs I had 13 deg. I started at 10 and worked up from their. I had a ton of passes at 14 to 15 lbs and when I tore the motor down it looked new inside. I did keep the fuel on the fat side.

My stock lq4 I am at 14* with just pump 93 @ 15-16psi. There's not going to be some "set/magic" boost and timing curve that every motor will follow with xx fuel you run, every setup will differ some. Just pay really close attention to everything when tuning and turning the boost up. Don't get too greedy with the timing and it should live for quite a while, mines been doing great, sadly the stock 4l80e finally gave up though.

i made this a while back when there were lots of threads like this

this is conservative to some but its a great start and works out for nearly all my builds

boost and timing advice-cd0lbxy.jpg

obviously some cars and setups are different, i would say if you are higher than regular truck 9.x to 1 you should maybe start more conservatively, but i will note i have never blown anything up on 14/14

its a great start and you can move around from there

My turbo truck was the first vehicle I have ever tuned. I think tuning now is as much fun as the going down the track or street. Have fun!
