Default Stock 4l80e TC + turbo?

I am Wondering how a stock 1ton truck 4l80e torque converter will do in a turbo car. My friend is working on a hx52 powered lm7 backed by an 80e and stock TC, but it might be a while before it's done and I'm wondering about doing the same.

Question would be better suited on the truck side, as this was done years ago with good success. I can tell you from personal experience though the stock converter is not performance oriented at all but feels good around town. I believe Smokeshow took out the crankshaft due to the converter cover flexing under serious power.

This car will maybe be on a strip 1-2 times ever, it's mostly just for fun. I can only stick a 245 tire in the rear anyway so it won't be a racecar anyway haha

The stock 6l HD converter works OK, you can light up a small single with it. I run one in my S10 and it is a little reluctant to build boost with a 5.3l and a S78 with a 1.32ar housing.

I had a stock converter for a bit and liked it. I had no problem building boost with a 6.0 and 7675 turbo. I was in the 700rwhp range at the time and it seemed to handle it fine. I switched to a 10.5" FTI which is nice, but honestly for a turbo street car that spools reasonably well, I'd rather save the $1k. My main concern was at what power level do they start coming apart, which is why I have a billet converter now.

Denmah tried it with a stone stock 6L and a 80mm VSRacing unit (I believe) and had pretty good luck with it.

Mine will be used for street driving with regular street tires on a stock bottom end 6.0 engine with a gt2-3 cam. It wont go to the track but maybe once to get a time slip and will be a dd. Im looking to make 500-600 rwhp with the ON3 kit or a D1 procharger kit. I think Im gonna try the stock converter and see how it does.

i have had no problems with stock converters in the 400-700 wheel range

you just have to understand the car is never going to leave or be able to scoot from a stop with any authority

Thanks for the response guys. Sounds like using the stock TC will be fine, at least to get the car on the road, it can always be upgraded later.

Does anyone know what the stall speed of a stock 4l80 converter is? How about the stock converter stall speed in the LS1 4l60? Im hoping they are close but given the 80 is more for towing it might be a little lower.

GM put the 80e behind the 4.3 v-6 with a higher stall speed, but still only about 2200 rpm. The bigger problem is the converter weighs 65 pounds….

So your saying all 4l80 converters have 2200rpm stall speed or just the ones put behind the 4.3's? Mine came out of a 2006 express van but IDK the engine size it had. Im sure the 80 converter weighs more but the stock 60 one weighs probably 50lbs If I had to guess.

The stall speed is pretty much dependent on low rpm engine torque. I had a shop in Portland OR cut a stock 4.3 converter and increase the stall speed to over 4000 for my 496 bbc, but that engine had 600 ft-lbs @ 3000 rpm…
