Default LSX Subaru WRX S476r/Stock48 Cam/Dominator/E85 Build

Figured I would start build thread in here, should help me document the build process and also open up a line of communication for suggestions/opinions from all the forced induction experts around here.

Here is a little run down of the car and its history. Its a 2002 Subaru WRX with 80k miles. It previously made 629 awhp with a big turbo/E85 and also broke quite a few expensive parts along the way (2 motors, 1 transmission + other stuff). The car weighs in at right around 3000 lbs. The nice thing about those expensive parts I mentioned earlier is that they also sell for good $$$ used, so I parted the powertrain and drivetrain out and made quite a bit of money to fund the LSX/S476r swap project. I sold the drivetrain (trans/trans controller/rear diff/driveshaft) as a package for almost $5,000 alone. I had fabricated my own turbo kit for the wrx, so I made quite a bit selling that too. All the parts sold extremely fast except for my 4 FIC 2000cc injectors, which I am still trying to sell, only have around 3k miles on them so they should have went fast lol. As the car sits right now it has no motor, transmission or rear diff. Basically it is stripped down and waiting for the LSX stuff.

Here are a few photos of the car a few years back, don't mind my friend in the background.

This next part is where stuff starts to get wild... I had Nigel, from Fast Nigel Fabrication (V8wrx.com), build me a LSX swap/turbo kit to meet/exceed all of my goals/plans for the car. Nigel is an amazing fabricator and an all around great guy. His work turned out above and beyond what I had expected.

Here are a few photos of the FNF LSX cradles/subframes and turbo kit.

Rear Diff Cradle

Oil Pan

Turbo Kit

That is pretty much where I am at with the build as of now. I need to get the cradles powdercoated black asap. I have a stock48 JFR cam and springs ready to go. I picked up a "running" LQ4 6.0, but it ended up being trashed, piston broke right off the wristpin and the timing chain was also broke. It ended up hammering that pistion right into the head. The eBay scammer said,"I checked the compression and it looks great, it was out of a running 2005 truck, should be perfect for your build" . So I am still on the hunt for a solid sbe motor, might just go the LM7 5.3 route because they seem to be available everywhere.

I still need to pick up the Holley Dominator, FI billet S476r, fuel cell/lines, transmission, tires and all the little miscellaneous stuff but the project is well underway.

Looks like a cool project, and it is amazing that some one makes all of these components to do the swap!

Nice! What are your goals? What is the old weight vs expected weight?

Very cool, what trans are you putting in this thing? Can you fit a 4l80e in there?

Thanks for the compliments everyone! Nigel really over did it with all the fabrication, I am super stoked with the finished product.

Jax04- Right around 2k for the cradle, A-arms with rod ends and spherical bearings, trans mount, motor mounts, Hd Bump Steer / Tie Rod adapter kit, bolt & hardware kit, WhiteLine steering rack bushings, Energy Suspension Gm trans mount, Energy Suspension Sway bar mounts & bushings, and steering linkage modifiction.

chuntington101-I am using the 350z 3.357 ratio rear diff and 350z rear axles. The original plan was to do a t56 magnum (I have the t56 trans mount from Nigel), the car previously had a subaru STi long ratio 6 mt and I loved it. After a lot of thought, I may go with a 4l80e/9.5" PTC, I am sort of undecided at the moment. Any thoughts and opinions on the subject are welcome! I am starting to think it may be easier to control on the street with the 4l80e.

98Camarod-My goals for the car are simple: make it more reliable than the 4 cylinder and to build a fast, fun, street/track beast. Honestly, I would be happy if I was able to drive/race the thing all season and put it back into the garage for winter storage with the car still running. I am tired of downtime from broken expensive motors and rebuilding over and over. I am going to try as hard as possible to go fast using the KIS method "Keep It Simple"...

The old weight is right around 2950 lbs without driver. I am guessing the new weight is going to be around 3000-3050 lbs. I am doing a few weight reduction mods while I am doing the swap to help keep it in the same range. In my notes I have the subaru motor (no accessories) and transmission weights at 200lbs and 192lbs, for the 6.0 motor and t56 I have 297 lbs and 125 lbs. Only about a 30 lb difference give or take, as long as my notes are correct . The 350z rear diff must add about 40 lbs though, its twice the size of the wrx rear diff. Truthfully I have been thinking about doing a 20 gallon fuel cell in the trunk instead of a 15 gallon, just to try and put some extra weight back on those rear tires.

Willizm- Transmission selection is still undecided, T56 magnum or 4l80e are the main candidates. The t56 fits the tunnel like it was made to be there, the 4l80e on the other hand is going to require the trans tunnel to be slightly modified. Just a little cut and weld job on the tunnel nothing too crazy.

It would be a shame to build a car this unique and throw an automatic transmission in it.
