Default A few newbie boost questions

Hi guys, I'm about to plunk down hard earned money on engine internals and have a few questions. I already have a 5.3 block and the new style cracked rods. I heard those rods are good to 800hp(or more?) and would like to build the rest of the block to match. My cam is pretty big at 239/239@.050, .620/.620, 116+4 but I'm going to try rhoads lifters with it and bore to ls1 size. I also have 317 heads. Thanks for your time!

1) Wiseco makes some nice ls1 flat tops that would put me at around 9.7 to 1. Is that too high for 20+psi? A friend tells me to go even higher with the big cam. I think he's a bit crazy.

2) With the 317s, I understand they have a thin deck. Will arp studs help keep them from lifting or is it not worth it over arp bolts?

3)When are people upgrading to arp main studs, or is stock ok?

That size engine and that cam is going to result in a slug @ low boost conditions.

Let's say I get a more sensible cam, like 224ish.

I bought the wiseco's, I assume they'll be ok since people boost stock bottom ends that high with around the same cr. Also bought the head studs, can't hurt. Still wondering about question #3 though.

I'd like to build the engine for 800. However, the fastest I've been is 12s, I imagine I'll be content with much less than that for quite a while. I'd just hate to build most everything but leave an Achilles Heel.

You won't need the main studs. Head studs, yes. I wouldn't bore it to the 346 specs. Keep it 5.3 and if something lets go, those blocks are a dime a dozen. I just boosted a 5.3 for my cousin. We used Kmj head studs, on3 76mm turbo, 60lb inj., ls9 hg, and Tsp 224 228 cam. This is on a z71 extra cab truck and when boost comes on, hold on tight.

Thanks! Might not be a bad idea to throw an untouched jy block in at first to get going and learn how to tune it.
