Default 408 stroker turbo question

Anybody running the BorgWarner AirWerks Turbocharger 171702 on a 408 stroker and want to give me their input? The details are
Compressor Wheel Inducer Size: 75.00mm
Compressor Wheel Trim: 55.68
Compressor Wheel Construction: Cast aluminum
Compressor Outlet Style: V-band
Turbine Wheel Exducer Size: 96.00mm
Turbine Wheel Trim: 84.70
Turbine Housing A/R Ratio: 1.32
Turbine Housing Inlet Flange: T6
All input is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Sounds like a box stock S475. One of the most common Borg Warner turbos out there. There are literally thousands of them out there on everything from daily drivers, diesels, tow vehicles, to 275 tire drag cars.

Exactly what kind of feedback are you looking for? They're absurdly reliable and rated to 1000 hp. You're not going to find many complaints.

JoeNova you are correct. The 171702 part number is the standard box stock S475.

I was looking for anything between 700-900whp. I didn't know if this turbo would be too small and create too much back pressure. Everyone says to use the S480.

Might get you 700, but is too small for much more than that. Would be a very fun daily driver combo though, very early torque and quick spool.

Are you sure he couldn't get more than 700? Lots have pushed that same turbine to 1100+ hp on a 400" so it won't be a turbine restriction.

I haven't looked at and efficiency map to see where that compressor would land on a 408 but he should be able to get upper 700s at 14 or so PSI with a very very tame cam.

Sadly I agree though. The S480 compressor is better matched and isn't much more.

feeding that many cubes the shaft speed is going to be rediculous and the output temps will probably be close to 300 degrees... It's not enough compressor to feed that big of a motor.

Step up to the S480... From me... its only an additional 200 bucks if you keep the standard cover. Thats the minimum sized compressor i would put on it.

I had a 76mm borg on my 408 for a while and it was just as I described. Compressor is just too small to feed that many cubes regardless of boost if you are shooting for a big number. Went to an 80mm and it was worth about 200hp more, then went to the 82mm which is another 150hp or so over the 80mm. Noticeably slower spool though. The s476 was very fun under 5000rpm, perfect for a DD-type vehicle.

I was actually looking for a S480. That's the turbo everybody recommends. I couldn't find one under $1600. Can you direct me to the S480 with the standard cover instead of the race cover please?

Plenty of people sell the s480 with the race cover under $1600. Call Jon at Huron Speed. He'll hook you up.

Afraid you may not have added the race cover for that price...

a cast 80mm Standard cover unit is 899 from me.... the 1600 dollar ones you were finding were probably the billet units.

Give the shop a call tomorrow at 888-583-4408. Can get ya lined out on one.

Here's the link to the turbo on my website....
