Default Head choice for 408ci 91mm turbo

I'm looking for more of a budget head now. I've spent so much damn money lately I don't feel like spending 2k+ on heads. I'm looking to sell my afr 230s and thinking about lsa heads...

My motor is a 408 done by Texas speed and I have a bullseye compr 91mm.
Looking to put down 850+rwhp on pump and meth. Looking to shoot into the high 8s and I'll be happy with this set up.

I've read through a bunch of threads from all over but I'm looking for some up to date data on these heads. Was going to go with ls3 cnc ported heads but I've been reading a lot about these lsa heads now.

Let's hear some advice guys!!!

With that size motor and turbo, you should be able to hit your goals with stock unported castings.....

I don't think you're gonna have a problem making a 408 91mm get to 850hp on any head, even stock castings.

Untouched 317 castings have made a ton more power than you plan on making with a smaller turbo at the same cubes. Just picked up a set for $120.

He's probably wanting to sell the AFR heads and recoup some money for the turbo build, but I do agree that the AFR heads you already have would be optimal due to their great flow characteristics and thicker head deck surface. If your goal is 850+ HP, then you can easily achieve that, and much more, with stock 317 castings.

Not sure what your budget is but we have our CNC ported GM LS3 castings on sale for $1200.00 + springs right now.

There is a turbo Fox body running a forged 402 and stock 317 heads that went high 7's@174mph I believe and stock LS1 intake/TB. Over time the thinner head deck may distort. It can only heat cycle so many times before it can't take it anymore.

You can pick up stock thicker deck LSA heads used for about $800. Then you need a good spring kit. Run an LS3 intake for budget setup if you choose these heads. I've made over 1200rwhp on a stock intake. It hits a wall around 6600RPM for power as I believe flow limit is capped at that point... but it still pulls to 7500rpm when needed. 7000rpm shift points seem to yield the best mph on my car.

Stock LSA castings until you remove the "airfoil wing" in them.... actually flow less than LS3 heads. So you should at least do a little hand blending.

thats exactly right. ive spent so much money the last few months i figured i would sell the heads, and free up some money with going with a budget head as i still have a few more grand to spend. im just scared of the stock 317 heads lifting.

this is honestly what i was going to go with at first but if i buy those, with new springs and all that, im probably looking at close to 1700 which is a little less than i would sell my afrs for.... so i might as well just keep them

this is exactly what i was thinking of doing. i know that the lsas dont flow the greatest, but i figure with boost ill make up for that. and i read about that wing.... ill have to do a little more digging into the research i was just hoping to find someone who uses these heads or sells them and has actual results that are up to date.

Stock cast LS3 heads are $1000 New. They probably flow similar to your AFR heads.

Trust me I would love to keep the heads but I figure why not sell them, get a decent head, and have some cash left over to spend on some little ****

I would keep the afr heads. If you go with a l92 head then you are going to have to buy a new intake too. If you go stock heads 317

I already sold my intake so that doesn't matter anymore . I'll 99% most likely go with the cnc ported ls3 heads. I need to lower my compression and my afrs won't cut it. My original plan was to build a nitrous car but and greatly changed so I need to lower my compression . That's why I was going with a new head choice

I would keep the afr heads and sell the turbo a box stock s480 with race cover can be had for $1100 shipped new and will do what you want...and lsa heads are not thicker deck wise they are just cast different which makes them stronger the a 317 or l92

The afr heads are 65cc heads and I have -10dish pistons. I figured I would go with a different head for lower compression. And I thought about sellings my bullseye comp r91mm it's brand new. I would just have to find a buyer though. I was sort of worries about it with spool time

If your pistons are flush and you ran a 60 gasket that would put you at 10.5-1 comp which depending on fuel being used that aint bad..dont get to stocl on static compression though you have to look at dynamic also..this is the very reason why you see some motors not able to run on pump at 11-1 comp and other on pump at 13-1 comp

408: Forged 4.00" Crank, Forged 6.125" Rods, Wiseco 4.03" -10cc Dished Piston Set, Steel Top/Napier 2nd Ring Set

This is what my motor is.... So I'm correct, wouldn't my heads put me higher than 10.5-1? I thought the ls3 70cc with ls9 gaskets would put me at that..... I may be wrong but I'm just going off the calculator. I want the car to be able to run on pump but then race on 105-110. There's no e85 anywhere within 40 min of me so I'm not going that route

if your pistons are out the hole .007 or so and used ls9 gaskets then you would be like 10.8-1

you have to figure out if your pistons are below or above your deck height to be able to figure out comp also..Dont forget theirs other gaskets out their besides ls9..would you rather put a less par head on a motor or spend a extra couple dollars to put a thicker head gasket on the motor which will give you more quench which is a good thing on a boosted or nitrous motor and bad thing on a n/a motor..more quench will give you a less sensitive tuning window.i know cometic makes a 60cc gasket and i used all your info besides the deck height to piston above or below bore which i made it just even and it gave me 10.5-1 comp that way.

i have a turbo sbe lq4 right now im doing for street strip fun till i kill it and my static compression is 10.66-1 comp but my dynamic is 8.2
