Default 1979 Fairmont 4 door - Bone stock 4.8, GT45 turbo, Powerglide

Hey guys,

Decided to start planning and building a fun street car with motivation from Matt (Denmah).

I'm going super low budget to start and get the car running. After it's good and semi-reliable, it'll get a cam, more boost, and supporting upgrades.

What I plan with the car is as follows:
1979 Fairmont 4 door

Engine:
Stock gen 3 4.8
PAC 1218 springs or http://www.ebay.com/itm/LS9-beehive-ovate-wire-valve-springs-LS3-LS2-LS6-12625033-GM-GMPP-set-of-16-/121582626780?hash=item1c4ee3a7dc&vxp=mtrStock cam

Turbo system:
GT45 69mm
2" crossover
60mm china gate
4" downpipe

Fuel System:
Sumped stock tank
Bosch 044
80lb injectors

Transmission:
PTC transbrake powerglide
PTC 10" race converter

Rear end:
Turbocoupe 8.8 3.55 gears trak-lok
Disc brakes

Suspension:
Stock to get it running
Summit cheap upper and lower control arms
Couple softballs in the right rear spring

Engine management:
Microsquirt
AEM wideband

Really appreciate any input you guys have. I would love input on really cheap valvesprings that'll work with boost. The stock cam shouldn't be hard on springs.
Thanks.

Sound like a fun buildt. What ecu are you going to use. I am running a powerglide to. Its fun in the streets. The bosch 044 is enough for a street car. I go 10 sec with only one. And using the pac 1218 springs

Nice that's good to hear.

I'm going to run a plug and play microquirt from either EFI source or Shannon Taylor.

Car looks grandma fresh. Where did you pick it up at?

Nice plan. I am just up the road from you near topeka. Forced86 is in Wichita too and either of us can help with the micro stuff.

Check out my vids in my sig for micro harnesses to give you some ideas of how easy it is to build a harness for cheap.

Me too but I really like the tires on the john Deere tractor........ I bet they really have good grip.

There used to be a maroon square-mont wagon here in topeka that was straight as an arrow. Finally scraped enough but to make an offer and the old geezer sold it out from under me.

Looks fun! Hard to believe how much weight you can pull out of those 4 doors. What is the power goal?

These are the cheapo china 1218 knock off's I'm told. I've never used them but I believe Matt did on one of his fairmonts.

The LS6 "blue springs" would also be fine with a factory cam.

I actually got the car from a guy I work with in California.
I moved back to California 2 years ago and forgot to update my location. haha

I'll definitely be checking out your videos.

Don't really have a power goal, but enough to break into the 9s. 600-700whp would be nice.

Those valve springs are cheeeap! Wonder if they work ok, might just go with the LS6 springs. Do you think the LS6 springs will handle low 20ish psi of boost?

Looks like the LS6 spring is 90lbs @1.8" & 294 lbs @1.25" That’s not much if you run any kind of cam. Stock 4.8 might be fine, couldn't tell you. Personally I’d go with the heavier cheapie beehive springs and LS1 cam. (watch the coil bind) The 4.8’s like to rev and the OEM cam peaks out too early IMO. (esp. if your looking to make 700whp)

My 4.8 was pretty worthless below 4k. I’d run a nice loose stall, cam that peaks around 6800 and shift it at 7200ish. Then run the big T6 S475 and save your penny’s for an intake that can handle some RPM.

Looks like the cheap beehive springs are what I'll run.

What do you think about the cheap trickflow 216/220 .560 114lsa cam for a 4.8?

It’s cheap and similar to some of the “Stage 1” 4.8/5.3 turbo vendor cams with less lift. Better than an OEM cam IMO. Depends on the setup as a whole, hotside pipe diameter, converter, turbo, intake etc...

If you’re going to spend the money on a cam, I’d get a big one and build the combo around it. Run the S475 w/ big 96mm exh. wheel and 1.32-1.10 T6 to keep back pressure low. Match that to a loose converter (3800+). Big cam should net you 75-100chp NA. At 22lbs you multiply those gains by about 1.5, so they add up quick.

I was debating if I should just get the 96mm exhaust wheel S475 with the T6 flange.

I'm going to be running a 2" hotside as that seems to work well and increase spool up. The car will be running the stock truck intake manifold.

Well change of plans. Going to keep this build super low budget and run a GT45 turbo.

Might swap the turbo later on for something else but this will get it going.

Couldn't agree more! Goal is 500whp with this setup.

Later on down the road it'll get a cam and a borg warner 75mm.

Got a motor, trans, and rear end today. Also ordered a plug and play microsquirt from Shannon Taylor. Really cool guy. Can't wait to get that in.

Details:
2003 4.8 with 109k on it.
Also ordered a stock case 1.76 glide with trans brake from PTC.
Got a 10" converter from them also, going to be around 3500RPM stall.
Turbocoupe 8.8 rear w/ 3.55 gears. I like this rear as it retains the 4 lug and has disc brakes.

Going to order the AJE k-member as that apparently allows the truck intake to fit according to Matt's new fairmont build.
I'll just make my own tranny k-member.

Can't wait to start building this car.
I'm itching for some turbo ls power.

I'll be starting a very similar setup myself in a nova pretty soon. Already got a 4.8, 68mm gt45, and i'm really leaning towards a glide too. I'll be watching this build lol
