The overall goal with this turbo swap was to decrease spool time (6 speed car) and create a more usable/wider power band while still being able to carry the power up top.

This new 72mm reaches full boost about 1100 rpm sooner and actually made another 15 kpa of boost with NO other changes besides the turbo swap.

Does it carry the power up top? Did you have to adjust your fuel tune on the big end?

Yes I agree, visually they look very similar.

The car did make more power but it wasn't a direct comparison boost wise.

Basic parts list:
l33
799 heads
228/228 114 cam
91 + meth

With the On3 unit the car made 637 whp / 548 wtq at 12lbs on wastegate only. When we finally had a chance to dyno the car again, it had a boost controller installed and the new billet 72mm. On 16lbs it made 747 whp / 652 wtq.

From what I've seen, the China turbos are holding together but make no where near the power of a quality unit.

Not surprising that a 72mm Turbonetics beat a 78mm On3.....and I'm not knocking On3 at all. $500 turbos do have a place in hot rodding.....,that place isn't on my car tho!!

What rpm are you seeing your full 16 psi on a 6 speed car with that turbonetics? I'm really considering their new 7875 unit on my 5.3/T56 third gen. I currently run their 7668 and spool time is incredible (15 psi by 3400 rpm in 4th), but it craps out big time on the top end. I'm looking to bump the powerband up a bit, but I don't want it to be too lousy of a spool.

For anyone interested in one of these units, we got it done for Ray and can set anyone else up with one at an awesome price! Shoot me a PM or e-mail to: huronspeedproducts@gmail.com

Nice write up Ray, thanks!

I would hardly consider the 72mm Turbonetics beating the 78mm On3.

"With the On3 unit the car made 637 whp / 548 wtq at 12lbs on wastegate only. When we finally had a chance to dyno the car again, it had a boost controller installed and the new billet 72mm. On 16lbs it made 747 whp / 652 wtq."

It made an extra 110hp with 4 more PSI and a boost controller installed. Spooling will also be faster with a boost controller installed so the 1100rpms is also skewed unless Ray means he did the test prior to installing the boost controller.
