Default 65 Chevelle 6.0 single turbo

Took my car to a mechanic for a turbo and basically just took my money and took apart my car and lied to me! Sucks but I always wanted a turbo so I'm going to try and do it myself. Can't be that hard right? Jk So bust out the popcorn and follow along! I already have a 06 6.0 and a 4l80e in so this shouldn't take to long. I'd be happy with 600 starting out and 900ish in the end and a clean install. But what do I know. I might get hooked on boost, sell all my belongings and be at the track any chance I get! Lol this will be my first real build so any pointers will help out. Also going to notch the frame to get some fatties back there. This should be fun.

Here she was before she was molested

Heres the damage

Now for the list so I don't forget. Remind you I haven't bought 80% of this so nothing's in stone and if you feel like putting a input in I'd appreciate it.

.on3 78/75 billet
.eBay head studs
.On3 intercooler or treadstone
.ebay radiator or re-use lt1
.truck manifolds modified
.BTR spring kit and stage 2 turbo cam
.ls7 lifters and trunion kit
.Adjustable timing set
.ls6 intake and valley cover
.aem inline fuel pump
.deka 80s
.name brand wastegate and bov
.3400 ptc converter or fti
.probably missing a lot from this list lol

All said and done it should put a smile on my face lol I'm slowly getting these items together and getting used stuff if possible. Already sourced parts from the classifieds and Craigslist. Should be a low to mid budget build.

Thanks toytech! Nice twin setup you have there. Looks like it was made for it lol.

Sorry to hear about another shop ripping people off.

For you target power level I would reconsider the S480. Thats way more turbo than you need. I would be looking at an S369 or S472 and you will still have room to turn it up a bit in the future.

From what I'm gathering the s475 s480 would be **** on a 6.0. Heck I see both of those on 5.3s lol. Yeah I might be happy with 550 now but sooner or later I'll want to turn it up and I'll have it on tap.

I would avoid the S480 for such a modest goal as well. Using a turbo capable of twice the power you're hoping to make is a bad decision. You'll likely be less than impressed with the powerband.

People here seem to think that you pick a turbo for the engine size, and pay no attention to power goals and what an oversized turbo means for overall performance.

U may want to look at alocker's build and the KB truck log for a clean install. I built my own, but would probably buy one and modify it if necessary next time. Glad to see your buying tools for your own fab work. It's a great investment. Good luck.

s475 will get you to you goal 550-600 to the tires easily with the 6.0L at less than half the cost of the s480.

I know several people having good luck with the Chinese ebay up and forward headers. I went with truck manifolds on my build but after seeing them in person I definitely would go that route with out hesitation.

I don't know how much thought you've given to a twins set up but those ebay headers, the cast CX racing 90 elbows and a set of BW s366 would make a ton of power and probably be a lot more fun to drive on the street w/o the lag of the bigger units. Food for thought anyway.

That's a gorgeous looking car good luck with the build

Thanks guys I use to practice mig and tig welding at my last job so this shouldn't be to hard. If all else fails I'll get an old co worker to come by and have him help out. The engine side is what's only making me nervous. I haven't really built a motor by myself but the ls1 how-tos and all the research I've done make it seem like I can handle it. And I've read a lot on turbos. Kinda comes down to personal prefrence really. And speaking of kb racing his post swayed me into the s480. Thanks for the kind words everyone she definitely is a keeper, she has a pretty cool back story too.

Judging by the picture your Chevelle is mostly a street car?? For a point of reference I am thinking about changing my S475 to and S472 SXE for better street response. If you already have the S480 then cool, but like others have said above it's double the turbo you need. The "more is better" pitfall also applies to turbo combos and staying conservative will likely be more satisfying in the end especially on the street.

Kyle was comparing a very small turbine S480 to a very big turbine S475. Poor comparison. The S475 with that same turbine would be even more responsive and still capable of far more power than he was currently making with the S480.

That screen shot was not showing up on my computer yesterday but now I see it. I agree that the turbine size is an apples to oranges comparison. Brake boosting is great but if you didn't have to do it would you still want to?

I see what your saying. After reading some more I think the s475 1.10 is more up my alley. I'm not looking for max effort just a lean mean street machine. What mm you guys suggest 87?

The box T4's usually have the 83mm turbine which is exactly what I have. The 4" DP is also going to be easier for you to deal with.

Thanks for the reply alocker. You suggesting the 83mm? Mind If I ask why your considering in stepping down a size? I mean you said why, but wouldn't it be hard to get any traction with full boost coming on so quick? What if I drop hot side size down to 2.25 instead of 2.5? And yes 4" dp would be doable with my space.

Jarrett ran an 8 second pass with an 83mm T4 S475 on a stock 6.0 in his Nova.

I have an 87mm 1.10 billet S475 on a 5.3 and it spools very very nicely. The 83mm on a 6.0 should have a nice fat powerband, tons of low-mid range torque and response.
