Default My 98 z28 turbo build thread

last summer I purchased a 2 owner 98 camaro z28 m6 car. It instantly became a nitrous car for a short period of time. Shortly After that I stumbled across a Huron v1 ac kit on eBay and thought , why not build a turbo car. here is a complete list of every part purchased
Huron v1 ac kit , piping only
cx racing intercooler kit universal
tsp 228r cam kit in a package deal

arp head studs
ls9 gaskets
ls6 infake
60 lb injectors
racetronix 255 lph pump with kb bap
ls7 clutch and flywheel from tick performance
speed bleeder
new throwout bearing , slave cylinder
turbonetics 7868 turbo
huron speed feed and return lines
xspower wastegate and bov
eboost street
holley hp efi, digital dash, Holley water meth kit
derale fans
turbowerx exa pump
gmmg catback
qtp electric cutout
now for the suspension stuff
bmr turbo k member
strut tower brace
bmr sway bar "had to custom make extenders for the sway bar to clear the v1 kit, out of aluminum stock"
adjustable lower control arms
adjustable torque arm
sub frame conenctors
koni str.t with strano springs
still rocking a 10 bolt with axles, clip eliminator a, diff cover , but still in borrowed time for sire.
also bought a Mighty Mouse pcv wild setup .
mg shifter too boot
now my only mechanical issue that is troublesome is the fact that the car continues to smoke at idle and when I come to a stop. Not sure what's causing it but it's been a huge headache this entire time and I'm at my wits end with it . All I can assume is either turbonetics turbos are junk or I need an oil restrictor.
i made a respectable 609rwhp 647rwtq today uncorrected . This was at 13 psi.
now comes phase 2 of the build .
i picked up a low mileage 6.0 out of a 2002 2500 hd over the winter
from what I've learned in here , I'm on borrowed time with my sbe ls1. I'm gonna tear down the 6.0 this weekend and rebuild to stock displacement , and run an aftermarket forged rotating Assembly . I plan on running two 7868s in the near future , but I'm wondering if there's a single turbo out there that is a direct fit for my kit and will make good power in the meantime . I know a single 7868 has way to small exhaust for the 6.0 and will have back pressure issues . For a fuel system I'll be running the racetronix dual 340lph pumps, and their complete line, rail, fpr setup.
Injectors im still undecided on but Its looking like Id is the way to go. My intentions are to make 1200 rwhp , behind a built m6 and fab 9 and have it be the baddest street car in my area. Id like to find a single to work with my current turbo hot side and put down 850-900 at the tires while I assemble this twin setup. My fuel system will get a kenne bell dual boost a pump for a little extra fuel in case I want to exceed 1200 . I have a high end goal , race fuel with water/meth of 1500 rwhp on occasion . What will it take to live at 900-1000 on the street , be raced a few times a week at 1200 rwhp and cranked up too 1500 maybe 4-5 times a season ? I really wanna see 9 flat with this car and a m6 which is a tall order but I think it can be done .

I don't think 1500hp is necessary for a high nine. Nor do I think that a stock 6.0 block will hold 1500hp without wetting the bed.

On occasion? Not like I'll subject it too that more than a few times a year . If I could get 1000-1200 I'd be happy as well. My current power level through robrobinette hp-1/4 calculator claims my car would run a 9.90 at 138 if I could manage a 1.4 60 ft time .
also forgot to add I received my katech tensioner today , my cbr alternator bracket, black powder coated power master 200 amp alternator , and tough stuff power steering pump. I also ordered my high output solenoid driver for my water meth kit to run through my i/o harness in the hp efi.

1500RWHP, even once is a really big dollar build. That's X275 car type stuff, and those guys don't even want to know how much they spend. I know one that makes that kind of power and has more in his shocks, and the data loggers on his shocks than I have in my whole build. No sense having it if you can't hook it. I think he lost count somewhere around $1/4 million. Now you can do it for less than that, but don't expect to be able to put together a 1500RWHP car for like $30K or something like that. I think 1000 RWHP for a car with plates on it is extreme. 1500RWHP is billet everything time.

A little rich but decent color
609-646 on 13 psi . Boost controller may be the drastic fall off?

New power steering pump, power master 200 amp alternator and 12 foot of -4an hose for my twin setup feed lines . Every little piece adds up!

Interesting enough I'm trying to figure out what options I have to hook up my Holley water meth kit . If I install it through the hp efi , I have to purchase a high output solenoid driver for an extra 100. Does anybody know a simpler approach to hooking this up? Could it be tapped in through my pressure switch from the boost a pump? Or even into my eboost streets aux setup ? Just looking for the simplest easiest way to get it done

Just picked this new toy up, time to start fabricating . Got a wicked good deal on it. Who knows maybe some budget mild steel setups offered in the near future?!

So I received my katech solid tensioner this morning , and ordered my Huron speed v3 twin kit! Parts are starting to pile up. My lq4 looks beautiful, spotless under the covers, and the cross hatching is still uniform. Tempted to go sbe with this bad boy and see what it'll do. As for the turbo setup, I'm running their standard intercooler that comes with the kit, a pair of pt6266 turbos, xspower dual 44mm gates and 50mm bov's. the new fuel system will arrive on Tuesday . I'm at a crossroads for sure with the build, I run Holley hp efi, so there's no option for transmission control. With the power level I'll be at , banging gears seems fun but it isn't gonna be nearly as fast . I'm torn between enjoying a "drivers" car, or running a 4l80e built to handle some punishment . I had a 10 second nitrous lt1 and while the car was my first real build, this car is just so much more fun to drive . Unfortunately I'm losing just about everything , that would make this considered a street car.. time to make a decision on a cage as well. Any recommendations as to what will be the tightest fit and best for a street build?

Why did you go Holley in the first place rather than tune your OEM computer? The Holley is nice, I wouldn't mind having one, but it has drawbacks too. You could do a stand alone TCM if you wanted to go 80E, or you could just make the jump to the th400. It doesn't need to be a stick to be a drivers car at these power levels. Stock Miata, yeah those need a stick, turbo LS not so much.

As for the cage, I'd just find yourself a fabricator to build it for you, I'd recommend going moly, because it's not something you can easily upgrade later. There are a few guys near me that do this type of work, and they are comparable to buying a "kit" price wise if you take installation time into consideration. That's not the time to learn how to use your new welder. BTW nice score there, I have a Miller that I really like, but that unit looks sweet. I don't have TIG capability, so if I need something TIG welded I tack it together with my MIG, then take it to a shop to have them finish weld it. I don't know what your welding skillz are like, but tacking stuff together, then getting a pro to weld it is a safe thing to do when starting out. Especially on something like a cage that your life may depend upon.

i was at a similar spot as you a little while back and I talked to a bunch of people with fast street cars, faster race cars and some local chassis and cage fabricators. the general consensus is that if the car sees significant street time, dont cage it. even a mild fender-bender will ping your noggin into a bar.

I can tig or mig myself, but bending pipe isn't as easy as other shops have it. I'm gonna go 4l80, full reverse manual valve body "no electronics to control" and not have to worry about the Controller. I went Holley because I wanted to be able to build my car, run the self learning efi, and have a great starting point . I had my tune just about spot on except he added two degrees of timing I spoke with Dave at Mighty Mouse, and he informed me just how expensive it was to keep transmissions in his car and other parts as well. From a cost stand point the 4l80 certainly is the cheaper option. From a fun factor stand point it's the t56 all day . I can't even run the car on the track right now as it has no roll bar no cage and certainly will break 11.50. I know it sucks for a street car to have a cage but it's the only logical thing too do , so I can enjoy track Time on sundays as well without being booted . The pt6266 should fit the bill real nice

My local track doesn't open until April , but I assume by may at the latest I'll have the new combo all sorted out and ready to rock.
