Who is making good power while passing emissions?
Hey guys,
I'm just curious as to how many of you are making some relatively good power (400+rwhp) while still remaining emissions complient? How are you doing it? Are you just pulling off the supercharger / turbo for emissions testing, or? If you could, describe your setup and power numbers.
Thanks,

can or can't? I thought NY was basically adopting Cali's emissions testing? I don't know anything about emissions so I apologize in advance for misinformation. I'm mostly concerned with emissions exempt cars, but may am interested in a 4th gen down the road a year or two. What if you flashsed the computer right before you went to get tested?

Nevermind on flashing the computer I've been told that there's a few tests that have to run for a few days before smogging the car.

On The Tree
Passed an offline test that I tried as a joke, never thought I would pass.
383 solid 224 236 sq trim aftercooled.
Made over 600 rwhp ran a best of 11.01 @131.25 with a 1.8 short, had to idle of line to keep from blowing the tires.

NY has emissions test for '68 cars? Did I understand that correctly?
That is one cool thing about CA. '74 and earlier do not require emissions test. That's one huge reason why modifying classic muscle is so much fun.

You cant just clear your codes and go test. The pcm has to self test certain systems and pass. In TX. '96 and up are just hooked up to the computer. If everything is okay, your in. I had one place tell me they wouldnt do it because I had no muffler. When I asked them to define "muffler" according to Tx., they couldnt. I just took it down the street and they hooked it up and it passed.

'73 and earlier are emissions exempt in NY as well. I was referring to 4th gens with regards to the emissions. I was going to buy one a few months back, but was unable to sell my truck, so I'm going to wait a few years and then get one, but I'd like to be able to make some decent power (450+rwhp) and still remain emissions compliant. I was curious as to how people were doing it.
As for modifying old muscle, I agree, the easiest way to pass emissions, is not having to .

I am noticing a trend here. Most poeple will not pass the test but we have fucked with our computer so we do.
So to anser you question NO not to many people are making good power while passing legel.

Displacement is had by swapping a newer model engine and all emissions equipment (LS7 etc). Then having a referee mechanic certify your car and assign a unique emissions number to it.
FI must be a CARB certified system such as ATI P1. The FI route might not get you all the way to 450 with only 5psi. Swapping a pully, cam or heads would. However, the car is no longer "legal" even though it may "pass."
Whatever you do, keep the stock catalytic convertors as they may reduce hydrocarbons better then the high flow replacements. Its the hydrocarbon count due to scavenging that fails most often on a sniffer test.
