Default STS Doubters....

Hey all, just wanted to post up and share my experiences. I do this cause I have learned soooooo much from you guys... I am going to try to give some back.

My Setup:

2002 TA WS6 Collectors Edition

Engine:

I started with my stock LS1 block and have added the following (I will try to include where I purchased the things from):

LS6 Ported Oil Pump (Texas Speed Performance)
LQ9 Heads (Stock GM) <-- This helps me run 9#'s with no fear...
318 Springs (SDPC)
SLP MAF
SLP Line lock
SLP Fan control
SLP Throttle Body
GT-7 Cam (LPE) - This is an AWESOME cam. I am sorry guys but for all the doubters of LPE cams because they are not reverse split.... read my numbers... do you see the TQ?

The turbo setup includes:

STS Base kit
Intercooler
Walbro 255 Fuel pump (Texas Speed and Performance)
42 Lb Injectors
Catalic converter replacement pipes w/ o2 sensors (Not installed yet)
(Currently a t-60.... this week it will be a t-67 turbo)
Tial BOV
Tial Waistgate
Custom silicone (Red)
T-Clamp Hose clamps (These are stronger and better looking then the normal ones)
Electronic Boost Controller
Harlan 2-Step

Drive train/Suspension:

Trailing arms (UMI)
Panhard rod (UMI)
TQ Arm (BMR).... looking to buy the new UMI... anyone want a slightly used BMR?
(Carbon Fiber Drive shaft.. not installed yet)
Custom Built 35 Spline 9" w/ Detroit locker
Strut Tower brace (UMI)
RAM HD Clutch w/ Flywheel

Almost all of my work was done by Billy at Texas Rear Turbos... and Sean at FASTECH did my tune. Thanks guys!!!

Hope this will help someone... And for the STS Doubters... I am making 506RWHP / 623TQ at 8.5lbs of boost.... I ran an 11.68 without my two step on a base model 60 Trim. I am hoping to have a 10.99 run with the setup listed above... I am going to try to be in San Antino at the upcoming race... look forward to meet some of you!!!

I will post some pics of the setup tomorrow!!

Jared

so heads/cam/rear turbo gave you 500rwhp?

you're now going to upgrade the entire kit to make more power?

why is STS not doubtworthy?

a mediocre cam and a 100 shot on drag radials would give you a REAL hard time on the track

Very nice start

Get some stronger valve springs, bigger turbo and turn it up to 12-14lbs. 500hp will be history

there is a guy in my town that has a 99 chevy truck with a 408 and a PTE-88 and he layed down over 900rwhp and 950rwtq.So the sts setup can make power.

don't waste your time with a T67...go with at least a T70 at a minimum.

What happened on the graph..did you spin your tires? You can see on the graph that the T60 is choke'n and can't provide anymore air.

How much timing are you running on your runs?

What's your a/f ratio?

These are questions that should be addressed instead of going off and going. STS sucks/blah blah blah. If you're only running 12-13* of timing, that's not bad, but get a bigger turbo, retune it and add more timing.

Thanks all and I agree... I am running a little thin right now with my A/F being 12.3:1. But it was not tuned at that originaly... not sure what caused it to slip. As for sparky's comment... I agree, but your NOS solution is not as fun... runs out at the bottle... and I havent seen a stock block NOS solution running 10's for any period of time. I will be there...

Darkblue... I agree and I would do that if I had the easy choice... I already own the 67. It was what I purchased with the original setup. I am looking at what solution I will go with when I go forged... a forged 347 or a 402/408. Cost is a factor... My endstate goal is solid 10's in my daily driver... maybe even 9's... we will see. The dyno skipped a reading because of a power surge (What the operator told me).... I dunno, but I will have a new one at the end of the week with the new stuff on it.

BTW... no offense taken by any comments here... I am looking for input and comments.. that is how I built my setup now.. from learning from all of you.

I'd recommend getting your air/fuel ratio down to 11.0/1 to 11.5/1 for the stock bottom end, before you do anymore wide open throttle runs.

I wouldn't add too much more power until you're ready to do your forged bottom end. Have fun with it! Bob

I have to agree with Bob here. and that a/f ratio should be on the street.

Are you using a FMIC or anything(alky/water or methane/water injection) to cool the charge down?

A 250 shot on a stock shortblock will last a LOT longer than your stock shortblock at 12.0 + .... I don't doubt the power a STS kit can produce , it's just in a bad place . Good luck

Yea I have a FMIC, I also agree with the A/F change. Sean at FASTECH is one of the best in Texas... I am sure he will tighten my tune up for me.

Bob, I agree with you on A/F too... that will be fixed on friday. But do you really think the limit of the stock block is 550? Zombie is at over 625 with his stock block... others are there too. What are you guys pushing in your setup?

It will break eventually, but the key is not having it knock. Zombie also runs around 11:1 if I remember correctly. If you go into KR(knock retard) you could kiss your motor good bye much sooner then later.

STS is a great company. People just arent pleased with them because they are afraid of them IMHO.. No one has ever dared to do a rear turbo setup, and when someone does it and perfects, or course here come all the critics from under the rocks.. I put a STS kit on my girlfriends 1500, and it will walk all over most ricers and hang with most modded LT1's all with stock injectors, stock fuel pump and only 5 psi of boost...

550 is about the max of the bottom end. You are putting so much money into the car why not forge the bottem end. do it once and do it right. If it blows it will most likely cost you more money to rebuild it then if you would do it now. Like Bob said don't make any more wot runs until you get the a/f down.

Still not an STS fan.You could have made the same if not more power on Spray for 1/5 the price, however to each is his own. Nice power what is the MPH of you 11.6 run?

AFTER MESSING WITH qUICKSILVERADOS sts TRUCK, i AM A BIG FAN OF THE STS KIT. He has the gt-67...6.0 forged..12 psi and no intercooler and runs 119 traps..11.35 is best et. Aint no cam only truck going to run that at 4600#. He runs on 93 pump gas....4l80e..2800 stall and 3.42 gears. I dunno why the haters...the kit works...I have seen it first hand and believe that he will run 10s when he gets that intercooler on and i can give it more than 12 degrees of timing up top

At the end of the day you still have to fill up the bottle. A cam and nitrous is just a simpler way to reach the same power levels. Having a turbo means you can get great results without the bottle. You will find that the costs will
even out over time.
