Default First time to the track today..

Well, have no idea what happened but somewhere between my garage and the first burnout I lost 2nd gear somewhere Worked fine on the street yeasterday checking out the new fuel stsyem.

Anyhow, 81 degrees today, 1200' track, 45% humidity, 30.06 baro (3000' DA) still managed a 6.53 @ 106 going from 1st to high gear. Kinda kills it a bit when the rpm drops down to 5200 at the shift instead of its usual 6000 but it ran OK for the DA and all still. Last pass was the best 60' of the day but I couldnt get it into 3rd quick enough and layed on the rev limiter for a while..

Had to include the first burnout on a brand new set of ET drags, cant figure out why them tires only last me me 50 passes

I'm assuming a valve in the valvebody stuck or something, trans worked fine except no 2nd, I'll fix it this week and try again next weekend..

Take a while for the video to work probably..

That's great, you were going to race no matter what huh! Most people would have called it a day and gone home unhappy with a broken tranny. You said screw it and ran her anyway! Get it fixed and report back with some 5's!!!

Just think of it as a cheap upgrade to a powerglide.

6.53 @106 without second....that's pretty cool. What fuel system did you go with?

I always shift in the burnout Kurt, I know its a bad thing to do but at least I come out of the water in in high gear

By the bits in the pan I would say its the sprag, trans is out but I'm too lazy to pop the pump tonight. Cant get parts till monday anyhow, inside looks clean overall except the bottom of the pan and there was no junk in the converter or cooler lines so it should be a quick fix..

Kyle, trans has around 200 passes on it, I beat it to death every time I race it and I was too lazy to go all the way through it when I had the motor out, just looked at the forward clutches and put it back together since it worked fine when I parked it - you know the old saying, never enough time to do it right the first time but plenty of time to do it over..

B18B1LS1, been waiting 4 months to make a few passes, Luckily I can do my own transmissions so I didnt care lol. If I was a die hard racer I would have ran the program today

Tom,
I just put a couple new walbros in the tank with a big Y and came out of the stock sender with a -8 elbow and ran -8 all the way to the rail, used the stock 3/8 feed for the return. Works a little better but I will have to do a real pump(s) if I want to step it up..

this is going to be a dumb question looking at what you posted, but I'm assuming shifting in the burnout is on hard on sprags? is it better to just start the burnout in second or third and leave it there? I've never heard about this?

Those times are nice considering you lost the gear

Wouldnt you get enough tire speed if you started the burnout in second and brought the revs up to 6000-6300rpm or so? that would probably help the trans live a little longer...

Cant wait to see the numbers on a ***** out pass

Here is what happens when you dont follow the rules, sprag and both the inner and outer race are destroyed. Rest of the trans still like brand new inside so if you are carefull a well built TH400 will last a long time. A new sprag, little cleaning up and flushing out out and it will be good as new

Shifting from 1-2 at high RPM on a burnout is very hard on a TH400 sprag, I should know better but usually I have a aluminum direct drums and they are a little more forgiving when going to 6000rpm to zero rpm on the 1-2 shift

I could start in 2nd but at a lot these tracks no one puts you in the water and when you are all strapped in its rough to know exactly where you are, especially when you have to back in. If you arent in the water or didnt get the tires wet enough a second gear start can get everything pretty hot.. You have to make sure not to come out of the water in 2nd also at high rpm and let the tires grab.

Nothing is indestructable, its a couple hundred dollar mistake but the thing took a full season of abuse lol, I'll be more careful this year..

Man, you got to work quick! Haha. That trans has taken quite the abuse last season and what part of this season it was running. Oh well, bound to happen sooner or later. Glad it is this early in the season.

Good luck man, my install will be beginning SOON!

if I had the parts here I would have been racing it this afternoon I try to make the car as easy to work on as possible, because I'm lazy..

Yea it took a lot of abuse, plus I street drive it a lot so I'm not upset it let go, I'm sure the 3-2 downshift/nail it at 70mph were just as hard on the ol' sprag. Its really more my fault then anything, transmission is the least of my concerns, parts for a TH400 are cheap and available

Good luck with yours Andy, I know you have been planning for a while.

Haha, well if it was the end of the year I wouldnt have cared, just got done putting it back together a week ago so I remember how to get it apart. Should be running next weekend, I would hit the thing at SDR but I am not going to deal with anything near Atlanta on a NASCAR weekend - its a 320 mile one way trip for me
