Default F/I Crew, Who has knowledge of broken comp 918 spring with less than .590 lift?

Thinking this will probably be my spring, comp 918s, to upgrade the stockers on my stock BLOWN LS6 motor in my 02 Z06.

If you broke one or have knowledge of someone breaking one, what were the cam specs, etc., and how long ago did this happen!

THANKS GUYS!!!!!!

The same 918s have been in my car for 2 years with 2 cams The 1st cam which I ran NA was .575 lift shifting at 6400 & the new one is .569. It's been FI with the new cam since 3/1/06. 3 days at the track so far this year. It's an M6 & I hit the rev limiter (6700) every shift. No problems with the valve train so far.

I've broken ONE 918 with over 30k on 'em... Pre-blue stripe ones too, you know, the ones that "always" broke? I've run them with 5 different cams, from 571 lift up to 609 lift. They're currently on top of a 238/240 .605/.609 112+2 XE-R, but I'll admit I need more spring.

We use the 918's on our LS1 and Viper motors, both N/A and turbo set-ups with very good results. I don't know of any broken springs in the last 3 years, and we do a lot of cylinder heads and complete engine builds.

what about the Big block style Beehive springs??? They are better than the 918's supposevly. I was told I needed to run the big block springs on my 383, d1SC motor.

GREAT INFO thank you very much. I take it then your vote for me is the 918s over the Patriot dual golds, for my stock BLOWN LS6 Motor?

I'll have to go back and verify my cam specs for the truck, but i've got ~32K on the 918's. 228/224 with a hair under .600 lift.

these are used springs from the car back when it was hydraulic, and i wasn't nice to them then. So that makes them, 4 years old?

The million dollar question is that although i know the 918s are a great single spring and make A TON of sense for my application, i REALLY prefer the safety net of the second spring offered on the Patriot dual golds and want to run a DUAL spring, but on a stock BLOWN LS6 motor, is the Patriot dual golds too much spring, that will screw something up on my set-up which has proven to be reliable after 3400 miles!!

No, I don't see you have any problems with the Patriot gold springs. We use the Patriots as well as the Comp 918's, and don't experience any problems. Bob

If you go duals I would change the timing chain, the duals have more pressure which will stress the stock chain too much.

Sorry for the mini-jack, but do the spring seats on the heads need to be machined to run the Patriot duals?

This is great info and gives me the confidence to do the 918, even though they are single spring and i REALLY PREFER dual srpings. HOwever, bc this is on a stock motor and it makes most sense to go with the 918s b/c of less weight and more of a stock replacement spring for the LS6 springs, and as it stands now, i am going with the 918s.

so would you just run like the slp timing chain set with the duals? or would you go to double roller timing chain

If i was inside the engine and upgrading my cam and using duals, i would go with the best double roller timing chain on the market (within reason price wise of course). Even the LS2 timing chain i have heard is a great replacement chain that is cheap!!

With a TR224 .563 112LSA cam I ran the engine to 6750RPM's at the track on at least 40 1/4 mile runs. Added to this another 5 or so passes to 6250 with the cam AND the turbo set to 5PSI. Springs have 5K miles on them and are daily driven. No problems yet.

I had one break on .578 lift cam the day I was driving to Lubbock to get it tuned. I wouldn't worry about it though, I think I just wound up with a faulty spring from te factory. I had it replaced and I haven't had any problems since. My car isn't boosted yet though.

Was this a blue strip 918 or with one of the earlier batches that had some issues. If blue strip 918 suprised to hear this. Did it damage your motor when it broke or did you luck out?
