Default $4500 to spend on turbo kit NEED HELP!!

Well guys im having trouble with my H/C setup only running 8.0 in the 1/8th. I broke my torque converter for the 3rd damn time last friday night . So Im thinking about going a different route with it, So far I have full bolt ons, a 232/238 .595/.605 112 LSA and MTI stage 2e heads along with a 3200 stall. I plan on changing to a higher stall maybe a 3500 or a 3600, and change the gears to 3.73,and sell my heads for 6.0 truck heads to lower compression. So I need yalls help, I have $4,500 left after all that to spend on a Turbo kit plus installation. Which front mounted turbo kit would be the best application for my 02 SS. Thanks Chase

4500$ isnt going to get you far at all... your looking at getting just an o.k. turbo kit...

youll need a different cam for sure and different gears and different converter...

i'd say your best option is to buy a used D1 procharger and sell your heads and grab the 6.0 heads...

use the rest of the money to get your D1 accesories and have it installed.

I agree, 4500 is not enough.

Save up a little more and wait for Hi-Flow's turn around time to drop - which it will, soon they should be selling kits off the shelf.

When that happens buy one of their kits, in the mean time here is a list of things you will need to buy

Boost referenced fuel pressure regulator
2-bar map sensor
HP Tuners setup
Fuel pump
Injectors (60lb/hr high-z)

Once you have all that stuff setup, its a matter of bolting on a kit

im pretty much done & coming outta the turbo $$$ nightmare. dont even try it with 4500.

if i could do it again, id probably stay with a good H/C setup...so simple, WAY less headaches & money and still very fun.

hell, i didnt even get it tuned yet and start breaking things yet.

See my list, you can also get a pre-packaged fuel system from ls1speed.com that works pretty good

Look at Race Fuel System Kit - 1

http://www.ls1speed.com/catagory.cfm...%20/%20Cooling

Then pick out some high-z 60lb/hr injectors

And then get yourself HPTuners and your 2-bar map sensor and you will be good for up to 14PSI

I'm going to have to also assume your not familar with tuning a turbo car, so you should count on $100 for a hour of dyno time and how ever much the tuner charges to tune your car.

Here are a few other items that are a "good idea"
Boost Gauge
Wideband o2 sensor & display - you may have to get a extra bung welded on your hot pipes for this when ordering the turbo kit so you can keep your OE O2 sensor and also have the wideband.
Boost controller, manual or electronic (EBoost2 is a great one)

ya see, those headaches come stock from the factory with a CAS kit.
Find a used Incon kit. you wont get any problems, and if you do, there is none of those pesky people to call to complain to anyway.

There are a few cheap kits out there but if you have the money go with the speed inc eliminator kit. Nice quality and Tom will answer any question you have and work with you. Plus they can install it and dyno tune it as well. They will also make you a custom turbo cam for your set up. If money is going to be short go with a procharger D1SC kit. That would be better than a CHEAP turbo kit in my opinion. My custom kit is near $11000 already and doesn't include fuel, block, cam, heads, any of that other ****. So it will cost you. Be sure before you start or your car could be sitting for a long time till you get the needed funds to finish it.

the kit is clean, keeps ac.

4995 + fuel + install + tune + some safe parts, springs, pushrods etc..

I wouldnt look at a turbo kit unless you have 6k+ to play with, and thats still bottom line IMO for one thats not homemade.

if you nickel and dime it, something is bound to go wrong, and then your outta $$

When I did my set up I hade a bunch of cash saved up.
Then --- still put like 8 grand on a credit card just cause in the end I wanted to make sure it wasn’t half assed, and would be reliable, ie killer fuel system, heads, cam, full boat of gauges, and expert tune.
Paid of the 33,000 dollar car before even paying off the CC bill.
I finally got a card with 1.9% so who cares. The car is unreal, and has been reliable.

All I’m saying is don’t half *** it, you won’t be happy, and you will be in the garage every other month, and that will make it loose its fun fast.

In closing, came across a TT porche the other day, watching that thing disappear in the rear view was worth all the effort and cash that goes into turbocharging a good ol american V8.

Here's whats real...............

Been there and done it with both sets of FI here.... SC and Turbo..

Take that $4500 and double it.
Oh and i almost forgot..... put $$$ aside for a forged short block also.
Sorry man..... it costs alot to do FI.

If you end up getting into a FI setup, just don't get carried away with running more and more boost and the car will be fine. Stock LS1's seem to handle 7-8lbs for a long period of time with a resonably safe tune. Just don't get greedy with boost, its so easy to keep adding a pound or two. And like NASTY said, start saving for a short block too, it's a very wise investment in the future for any FI car.

Good luck man
