Default Help choosing rear gears for Turbo application.

I will be running a 8.82:1 6.0L, a mvb 4l80e with a 3600 2.2 str converter, a 9", and a rear mount t-72.

What gears do you recommend?

You are missing a few important things. What tires are you running? What are your MPH/ET goals for the track? How much freeway driving will be done on this daily driver setup?

The general answer without the details would be a 3.5.

That gives you a nice compromise between loading the turbo, running a 28" tire out over 140mph at the track in third and nice cruising on freeway in 4th.

Here is the quick math checking tool:

http://www.f-body.org/gears/

You'll need to allow for at least a 5%-7% loss in MPH at the track for the converter slipping if you run it unlocked in 3rd.

I am sorry yes I am running a 28" tall tire. The mileage goal at the track is 125 or so in the 1/4 mile, trapping some where around 6-6500 RPM in third unlocked. I will drive the car on the street but it will no where be a DD.

I was originally going to go with a 3.42 but I have talked to some people that have recommened all the way up to a 3.9.

Thanks for the help.

I recently went from a 4:10 gear ratio to a 3:50. - Big difference. Turbo pulls even stronger. Before - you would have to shift very fast. Now you actaully have more time to spool out in each gear. I would recommend a 3.42 - 3.50

This is on an M6 but I just went from a 342 to a 310 w/my new 9". Most guys discouraged this high of a gear but I LOVE it! It spools sooner, feels tourquier, and pulls MUCH harder. Using the gearing calc my 4th gear tops out at 180 and 5th @ 243 which is part of the reason I picked the gear. Going for maxton eventually.

I have a th400 in my car with 3.5's and I'm changing them to 2.75's since I drive the vehicle a lot. When I was 6spd and went from the 4.10's to 3.42's it pulled A LOT harder with the 3.42's. Less gear = more fun

I wouldnt go any lower than a 3.50. Im running a 3.42 for the same resons listed above. To get the most out of your motor, you need to load it!

Well lets see I would say 3.42s cause those are gears are what the grand national guys run....they have run from 3.23s to 3.73s and the ones with the 3.42s are running faster then the others....so I would have to say 3.42s

3.55s it is then. Using there converter slippage and other calculators to properly fill out the rear gear calculator. It says 3.55s.

Go with the 3.42's then, that will give you room for future growth. With FI you'll be trapping over 125 mph in no time.

Several people with 4L80E's have gotten some extra mph by locking somewhere around midway through 3rd at the track.

I would go with the 3:42's.

I think you'll like it with less gear, most of the builds we do are 2.73-3.08 gear range.

I'm pretty sure he has been on that gear for quite some time.
