Default What Auto's Are You 550+rwhp DD's Using???

I posted this here because I figured I would get a better response from the boosted crowd. Im just looking into the future. I was wondering what automatic Trannys you guys are running. Im eventually looking @ 550rwhp regularly, and on a higher boost setting looking @ 600-700rwhp. My car wont be driven daily, but I want my setup capable of such and or a 200mi+ trip.

a th400 with a 3.0 gear should be nice. I'm running 3.5's now and it sucks, going 2.75 as soon as I can get someone to swap the gears for me.

Still using a built 4l60e. You might want to look at a 4l80e if you eventually want 700rwhp unless you don't need 4 gears..

Are the 4l80e's expensive? Do they swap right in? I just want nice set up. I dont want to be spinning high revs on the highway. I will probably be changing my gears from 3.73's to 3.42's as well, maybe a little lower.

TH350, billet sprag, 2.73 gears here.

The TH350 has been abused, but still holding up flawlessly under 700+ rwhp.

Stage 3 built 4l60e tranny (good for 750 hp) with 3.73 gears. So far so good.

FLT 4l80e here, 1000+rwhp, 5000lbs, about 5000miles on it last year(2200 in one week).

you could go 200+ miles with a turbo 400 but it wouldn't be any fun. a 4l60e will last awhile but not forever. with a 4l80e you can bolt it in and be done with it prety much forever. you get the overdrive and lock up converter too.

Built 80's are not that much more than built 60's. If you are interested in my builder PM me and I will give you his info, much cheaper than the other alternatives (i.e. sponsors) that I looked at. I'm sure the swap is similar in an f-body, but for my truck I needed a new cross member, crank spacer, new flexplate, wiring harness adapter, dipstick tube, driveshaft, and a few odds and ends here and there. You will also have to cut and lengthen your tranny fluid lines. Call Speed Engineering and ask them, they put a kit together for the trucks, so I'm sure they know what it takes in an f-body. You will also have to have your PCM reflashed with a 4L80E tranny segment.

Since I dont have any smarts really in the tranny area, are you talking about buying an actual abuilt 4l60e, isnt much cheaper than buying a built 4l80e? Or are you referring to having my current tranny built, wont be much cheaper than buying a built 4l80e. I guess that was my main thing. I wanted to see if I could build my current stock tranny to handle the power.

Is it really that big of a difference between the 80 and 60?

A built 80E can handle 1000HP. You couldn't get near that with any reliability with a 60E, no matter how built. Once you get to the true 700HP mark, there are 2 groups of people: Those that have a 80E and those that regret not having one. Of course there are exceptions, but that seems to be the rule.

Between different forums, I see 2-4 guys per week that break their 60E somehow, even if they've already put some money into it. 3/4 of them moan and groan and then ask about the price of a good 80E, and STILL go ahead and rebuild their 60E, which only pushes out their disappointment another 6-8 months, if they are running some real power.

If you ask them how much the 2 or 3 60E's cost them total, you get a lot of embarassed silence.

****, if you have $30K in to the car, what's another $5K for a deadnutz reliable tranny?

I went straight to a Hughes built Street/Strip 80E behind my blown/nitrous 383, and I am very happy. The first time I added nitrous to my old 4L60/ZZ3 combo, I lost the 2-3 shift. Had to pull the tranny and have $600 worth of stuff added, but he screwed it up, so I had to pull it again for him to fix. 2 grand at that point would have been worth it just to have it in and reliable, but hey, 20/20 hindsight. Do it right the first time, like the Germans "Overbuild, understress."

ive been kind of curious about this as well. right now im wanting a t56 in my car as it doesnt have anything in it anyways. i dont (and wont) have 5k to put towards a transmission. plus i have a t56 wiring harness coming shortly. should i just go through with the t56 swap or would it be easy to pick up an 80e and buy the harness for it? car was originally an lt1/60e car but im swapping a built 346 ls1 into it with either a t67 or t70 set for about 650-700rwhp on high boost and around 500rwhp for daily driving. a major concern of mine is trying to use as much of the stock parts as i can for a swap to help with reliability so thats why i asked about the harness.

A lotta truth here. Mine has been out several times. It is holding up for now but I have lost confidence and am afraid to kick it down from a roll anymore (that really puts em to the test).

Like Ryan K I am running a Speed Secrets prepped 4L60E that was built up last year, so they CAN be built to take it. My car only made 540 at the tires, but it does have an additional 7% drive train loss from the Ford 9" & converter (documented on the dyno). And it now runs consistent hi 10s w/1.5 60' times + gets 20mpg on the road. (& it weighs 4000lbs)
