Default choosing a wastegate...

ok so id like to go with a pair of GT35R turbos that are internally wastegated using the highflow internal wastegate as seen on ATP turbo. now if i want to be in control of my boost from lets say 5psi to 20psi would i get an actuator that is set to 5psi and then just get a boost controller to allow it to go up to 20psi? is this possible whengoin the internal wastegate route? or is an external gate better? im just trying to save room with piping and it seems a lot cleaner and simpler going the internal gate route.

I wouldnt go internally gated for the type of power you will make at 20 psi on a V8.

Keep in mind, a boost controller will generally let you do 2x the gate pressure. So if you get them for 5psi you can only do 10psi.

You would need a 5 PSI actuator. A Joe P or similar manual boost controller can allow boost to be cranked up to any pressure that the flapper will hold before blowing open. Creep may be an issue as well with an internal gate like that.

IMO, 7 or 9 psi seems doable. If the combo is built to handle 20 psi, limiting down to 7 would only be needed for the track, or extreme street driving.

so am i better off goin with an external? i mean i havnt completely singled it out yet, i just wanted to try and have less piping and more space but if an external is what i need to control boost from 5-20psi then thats what id get. now what size/brand externals would i get for twin gt35rs?

If you have the option, and the space for external, go external. Not many people here go internally gated. They are great for OEM apps where packaging and space is at a premium, and performance is not the top priority along with big boost.

What size motor, minimum and max boost, size of turbos, engine configuration will all play a role in what you pick. Obviously, you want to pick something that will flow the amount you need it to in order to maintain the least amount of boost pressure.

If you are doing Twin GT35Rs, I believe a Tial 38 would fit the bill. Jim here (INTMD8) is using them and worked well from what Ive read. If you arnt sure, Tial 44s will be more than enough.

Go with Turbosmart. Much better gate then the Tial, also flow more.
