Default Stock coils provide enough spark?

I have been trying to figure out whether the stock coils have enough in them to provide solid spark under heavy boost. I hate to shell out for the MSD's unless they will provide a big advantage.

I have a YSi on a more or less stock displacement motor. Small pullies, should be a good amount of pressure. I have searched on this, new opinions would be good to have though.

I fogot to mention, the coils are relocated, fairly far away from the plugs.

We ran stock coils on a recent build that made 820rwhp through a T400.

On 1000+rwhp builds we use the truck coils.

Dwell time is raised to 6ms above 3200rpm, 13-14v with both stock and truck coils.

I wouldn't use the MSD's personally as I feel they are not necessary and the few that I saw were shorted out and leaking on the valve covers.

Think of it this way, on a coil per cylinder V8, a coil have 8x the length of time AT ANY RPM to build a field (charge if you will) than the distributor guys go. There are lots of guys running distributors that make 4 digit numbers with boost. Obviously there is a lot more to it than that but you get the idea.

All things in good working order, I wouldn't worry about the ability of the stock coils fire the plug.

I ran stock LS1 coils to mid 8's @ 3700lbs. The MSD's are a waste of money.

Good enough for me, I'll run the stock coils and see how it goes.

Thanks for the replies guys!

Wheel To Wheel has a Yellow FIrebird with a 94MM Turbo making 21 PSI and 1500 RWHP and I know another Lae model Camaro making 1250 HP that used GM Truck Coils because they provide more spark. I like the MSD"S but if you are trying to fit everything in a budget the truck coil will handle almost anything on the street. LOL
