holset turbo
holset turbo, says hx35 on the side. guy says it came of a 5.9 cummins motor, has been changed to external wastegate. does anyone know anything about what kind of boost it could make, what kind of application it could be used for, etc. anything?

They're used on cummins.. I was just looking over a hx40m today.. on a marine 5.9 cummins..
I wouldnt use it on anything else than a diesel... they're small turbos used to take advantage of a diesels small rpm band..... internal wastgates arent good for anything over 15-20psi.. HAve you seen the turbo? So i take it if he converted it to external, he blocked off the internal wastegate?

The DIY Mustang guys use the HX35's. It would become a restriction on an LS1/LT1/350 SBC at higher RPM.
Holset also uses volume for the turbine housing instead of A/R. There will be a number like 19, 20 etc. stammped on the turbine housing, or just inside of the inlet. That stands for cm^2. The smaller the number, the smaller the A/R. That would be an important factor to consider also.
I've used an HD2 diesel turbo (68mm I think, can't remember) with success on a stock cube LS1. I'm doing a build with a 58mm H1E right now.
Just my $.02.

Only drawback to internal wastegates are slow opening times and pressure creep..

Huh, I left my book at work... but the book stated that internals arent usually good for anythign past 15-20psi... Maybe this applies to smaller turbos used on gas engines.. since I know the demand is alot higher on diesels..

I was told the small diesel rpm band doesn't matter, its not the rpm that spools the turbo its the exhaust..2500 rpm in a diesel or 6000 rpm in a LT1 exhaust is the key..On http://www.turbomustangs.com/smf/ ...BTW not just mustangs on there, Lt1's LS1's Olds, Caddy, and all kinds of homemade turbo guys running those turbos with great results..
