Typhoons and Syclones were "wet" cooled.. the turbo is a Mitsubishi 16G.. i used to have 2 typhoons but for some reason right now i cant seem to remember the coolant route from the radiator to the turbo..

go to www.syty.net and search around on there for the engine schematic

most turbo systems should be water cooled. the turbo will have an inlet and outlet seperate from the oil side. you just have to find a way to run the water through the turbo. my eclipse had hard lines that were used to do this. it helps prolong the life the turbo and bearings by keeping it cooler. that is one thing i dont like about the sts kits. they do not use water to cool the turbo. well none of the setups i have seen did.

most race turbos don't run water through them, but i believe you can just splice into your heater hoses.

yes wet turbos dont need turbo timers either... if you are just running the oil.. you really should have a turbo timer OR.. do it yourself by sitting idle for about a minute for the oil to cool.. prolong bearing life.

I have a water cooled Garrett sitting downstairs

I was just wondering if I had to do anything special when running the coolant lines or where to connect them

i know the ones to the turbo are metal braided.. but i just cant remember where they join up with at the radiator.. im thinking it was at the bottom from a preformed metal line tube.. and it goes back to the top driverside via same type of tube.. i'll look around in my garage for my service manuals to the typhoon... at least it will give you some idea..

i would not go as far to say they do not NEED turbo timers just because you have a water cooled turbo. have you ever popped you hood and watched how long that turbine housing (and most of the manifold) glows for after a few hard runs or just some mild street driving?

i was mostly talking about street use.. not racing.. granted you need a cool down after a hard run.. but i was just refering to normal street usage..

and you're right about the 17g.. my mistake..

There is an allen plug on the side of the driver's side of the block that can be pulled and used for the feed...return to a T-fitting spliced into the heater hose.

thats cos they get 10 seconds hard use then you shut down and let everything cool off. and i wonder how offen these turbos get rebuilt???

diffrent in street use thats why all OEM stuff is water cooled and has been for years!

i would still let the turbo cool down after a hard run, either with a turbo timer (dont like them) or by taking the last mile or so nice and steady

thanks Chris.

I believe all the IHI Mitsu turbos of that family are water cooled. WRXs for example use td04s and td05s from the factory and upgrade to 16s and junk.

The coolant lines are rubber hose on barb fittings into banjo bolts though, you do not have to use braided stainless.
