Sts Turbo Upgrade Question
Hi, I have just the standard turbo on my sts kit, and I want to upgrade to the gt67 ball bearing turbo, or better. I dont know a lot about sizing a/r and housing size. I will only be running 8 psi for this year, and 12psi or better next year. I want to size it so it spools fairly early. I am finding different turbos on ebay but never a gt67 ball bearing. will this turbo work for me ? thanks.

i would suggest you just have someone change the compressor wheel and get the .96 exhaust and that should do you good.
you'll need some serious motor/heads for the 12psi or put it on meth

Many guys, not just LS1 guys have swapped out for bigger turbos, ran the same boost level and run better peak HP and had a much better torque curve. The 60mm is fairly small for our engines, I think you'd do better with a bigger turbo, maybe a little larger exhaust housing and wrap those pipes going back !!

I called sts to see if they had any used gt 67 turbos, I was told that the gt 67 turbo @ 5psi would produce the same power as the standard 60 turbo @ 7 psi. I dont see how but thats what I was told. Also I asked about headers with there turbo system,( most people say headers are no good ) But he said headers will give about 15% more power. He said money would be better invested in other mods, but they dont hurt you they help. I also have 3" exhaust all the way back, he said that helps. Dont know if he is right on all this ?

I ran a 60-1 with a .84 A/R and switched out to a MP t-70 with the same .84 A/R. I think for stock cubes and heads .84 is middle of the road a .70 would be insta-spool and for real top end maybe a .96 A/R. I've seen a lot of people on this site switch to a .84 from the .96.

That turbo went for $1300.. I dont know how much it would have cost to change out the housing to a .96 but considering the price of ball bearing turbo's looks like someone got a deal.. I almost bought it but wasnt sure about it

If you upgrade the turbo internals, make sure its fully zero balanced on the turbo balancer. If not it will not survive. You can't just swap wheels and machine a cover and not balance the components and then assembly as a whole and expect it to work.
